Toddler bed?

Has anybody made the transition yet?  How was it?  We're trying to decide whether to leave Jane in her crib as long as possible (she's not climbing out of it yet) or to move her into a toddler bed before the new baby.  DH is leaning towards moving her earlier, while I'm nervous about having a newborn and a toddler who can get herself out of bed.  Any insights?

Re: Toddler bed?

  • Are you using her crib for the new baby?  If not, leave her in the crib if she is not climbing out and enjoy not having someone coming to your room and crawling in bed with you and kicking you in the head for as long as humanly possible!!

This is kind of my thinking, too. I like having him contained at night and want to keep that going as long as possible. How much longer until the new baby?

  • DD1 switched over at 15 months because she climbed up on the top rail and jumped out. The next 3 years she spent falling asleep on the floor because she's stubborn and would play until she'd literally call asleep. We'd move her to her bed when we went to sleep. For much of that time she was too young to really refrain from pulling everything out of her dresser (daily) and everything off her bookshelf (also daily). Love my kid, but she's never made things easy!

This is what I'm thinking, too!  Her crib is a convertible, so we won't be using it for the new baby.  We just have a lot of friends who have recently switched their toddlers over and I think DH wants to "keep up" if you know what I mean!

  • I'd keep her in the crib for as long as possible. I've heard it's not a good idea to make additional changes around the time a new baby arrives, and that some kids regress in certain areas once the baby comes. So she might do fine in the new bed at first and then have issues after you have the baby.. that doesn't sound fun!
  • If you're not using the crib for the new baby, I would leave her in the crib as long as possible.  DS1 was in his crib until 3y3m...he never tried to climb out and was a great sleeper.  As soon as we transitioned him, that was the end of his naps.  He did great staying in the big bed though (we skipped a toddler bed just to avoid an extra transition later down the road) and I think that was partly due to his age and him being able to understand our instructions and consequences better.  We'll keep DS2 in a crib as long as possible.
  • My lil guy co-sleeps and is already trying to climb over the crib rails on the odd occasions he is in his own bed.  We can drop it one more level, but then he is done.  I have been considering tearing it down to a bed and letting him sleep in it if he wants to.

Funnily enough last night he actually gestured and communicated he wanted to goto bed...so I'm thinking if I move the baby gate from the bedroom doorway to the master bathroom doorway  he might just go bed himself.. trouble with that is DH works nights and he would probably go in shouting Hi Daddy every 5 minutes during the day lol.

He can already climb on and off our bed, but doesn't get up in the middle of the night .. if he wakes up, he gets a drink and goes back to sleep.... so I'm pretty sure he'd do ok in a bed at this point.  I'm not ready to let him sleep in his own room yet, but there is a full size bed in there too which he naps on quite happily with big ted.

Everyone's situation and kids are different... you just have to go with your instincts.  I'm short so I won't complain at not having to drop the crib to the last level and struggle to get him in and out lol

When they all start complaining about their kids coming to their rooms at midnight he will be glad to not be "keeping up with the Jones"! ;)
