Teachers: how are you staying awake when you get home?

I teach first grade and come home every single day just dead to the world. Unfortunately, this doesn't work because I have a two and a half year old at home too! This is obviously my second pregnancy, but during my first, I was working in a cube...staying healthy and somewhat alert when I got home!
Now, I've been battling a nasty cold for the last two weeks and can barely make it to 8pm. Luckily though, my first grade team plans together and the aide in my room loves to grade to stay busy, so thankfully I don't ever come home with work...
How are you doing this?!

  • I teach high school, but I pretty much go to bed at the same time as my 3 and almost 2 year old, which would be 730.

  • I teach high school and take 3 PhD classes, so I basically have no choice but to stay awake. I generally go to bed early on Friday/Saturday/Sunday in hopes of off setting the exhaustion from the week.

I've also sit a lot more this year than I ever have during teaching

  • I teach 5th and we get out at 3. I have started leaving work right after school as much as possible (I usually work until 6). I don't have children at home, so I have literally crawled into bed at 6:30 before!!! I had to cut back on what I do after school and that really helped last week.
  • I go to bed shortly after my 14 month old does. It sucks not to have much "me" time at night but this momma needs her sleep!

  • I teach a 1st and 2nd combo. I go in early, get as much asi can done in the am, and then I pretty much leave as soon as I can after the kids leave. I've been going to sleep so early. It's kicking my butt.

  • Not a teacher, but school psych - close, but luckily no classroom. Still come home exhausted. I've learned not to sit down if I need to get things done. That only invites the sleep more. If I keep myself moving more and distracted by tasks, I find it easier.

  • I teach junior high and I have been going to bed by 8:00 every night for the past couple of weeks.  I've been doing a lot of sitting during the day too, as much as I can get away with.

  • I teach first grade too. I am basically useless after school. This stinks since we have 3 kids that are involved in sports and dance. This means I'm a human taxi. I am just doing the best I can to survive right now.
  • I am in second grade. I am at school by 7. Suppose to be there til 4:30. Usually I leave around 4. Tues I have to stay til 6 we have duties we have to do so I have to watch the kids that stay after school.
I also have an hour drive to and from work.
I am in bed by 8 every night and practically was in bed all day yesterday after coming home from work we had to be there for open house. I work at a private school.
Thank gosh I work with another teacher so we split the teaching.

  • First time mom and special education teacher...I nap everyday after school and am reminded by all my mommy friends to do it now while I can!
  • Honestly, I'm not ashamed to admit that I've handed off A LOT of the parenting duties to my H so that I can rest when I need it.  Some days I crash on the couch after work and doze while he entertains DS.  And I am almost always in bed right after I put DS down around 8:00.  At work, I instruct from a seat quite a bit more than I ever have, and I assign independent/group work more frequently so I am able to sit.  Taking it one day at a time and hoping that 2nd trimester brings some of my energy back!

  • Something I'm struggling with currently. It's difficult, but I try to leave as early as possible, so that I can get a nap in before I pick up my son. Even if the nap is only 45 mins long. Grading be damned at this point.
  • It has been tough. I teach 7th grade learning support so I have several subjects to prepare for and grade plus having to write ieps and hold those meetings. On top of it all I am directing the school musicals. Fortunately the first one is this upcoming weekend. I am so far behind in grading and the quarter is almost over. It has been a huge struggle, but mostly because of the show practices every day after school. I am lucky that I don't really have exhaustion as a symptom because I have no idea how I would get anything done at that point since it already seems minimal.

  • I teach HS (English), and I'm barely functioning. I take 2 grad classes as well, so the nights when I have to go to class, I'm up late--I power through with chocolates and lots of water. I don't have other kids, so on the nights I don't have class, I usually nap in the afternoon/early evening before making dinner. I have been saving time on that by making a big pot of something yummy on Sunday nights and then eating it all week--DH doesn't mind the leftovers.

I always take home work every day (English teacher--tons of essays), and I have fallen SO far behind on my grading as a result of this fatigue. I generally try not to grade when I'm too tired because I don't think it's fair to the kids to not have my full attention, but my grades are due in a week and I still have about 400 essays and projects to grade. Not sure I'm gonna make it.

  • Hang in there ladies! As much as this sucks, it's nice to know when you're not alone! :/

  • I teach 2nd grade and am EXHAUSTED when I get home. I've never really realized how much being on your feet and being super busy all day takes a toll on you! I've been going to bed between 7 and 8 every night and all I want to do on the weekends is sleep!!
  • I currently don't know how anyone manages pregnancy with existing children!  You are all magical unicorns!  This is my first and I have spent the past two weeks in bed every second that I didn't have plans.  I'm a substitute teacher so I guess I'm lucky that I have no grading or planning to do- but subbing sometimes takes some extra energy getting everyone in line.  I am just trying to take it one day at a time.

  • I work at a child development center and by the end of the day I am so tired...I try to go to bed by 9, but I am in school full time for my masters so that is not always possible. I am waiting on that 2nd wind of energy you are supposed to get!

I am so thankful I finished my master's this semester last year because I can't even imagine having to deal with that too!  Good luck!

  • I am with you StacyH0507!.  I am a junior high and high school teacher and am also working on my Masters.  I am writing my thesis this year and also took on coaching the speech team and leading a PLC group along with tutoring for our AVID program.  I feel so exhausted during the week and have been going to bed really early.
  • I work at a tutoring center from 3-8pm. I have been resting all day and getting to work feeling like a zombie. I keep telling myself... Just a few more weeks until thanksgiving break :))) yipeee
  • High school English teacher here. I'm generally useless after I get home. Luckily, DD (1 year old) takes a nap right after she gets home from daycare. Instead of my usual running around trying to get things done that are harder with her awake (vacuuming, dishes, laundry, etc.), I've just been napping myself. DH has been picking up the housekeeping slack, or it just hasn't been getting done as often (my carpet is disgusting, I don't care).

My grading is adding up quickly though. Luckily, we had parent-teacher conferences last week, and I don't usually have a lot of parents come in, so I was able to catch up on a lot of paperwork.
