Update I never ask medical questions but.....

I just need opinions on what you would do. My options are urgent care or L&D. My doctors office doesn't have an on call person to talk to. Recording just says to call during business hours.

I have what I assume is an ingrown hair near my bikini line. It appeared yesterday am and is now swollen to the size of a golf ball. I have tried everything and nothing is working.

I know this isn't an L&D issue but I'm afraid urgent care will refuse me because I am 34 weeks and they don't want the liability. Thoughts?

Update.....I called L&D and they said they can't lance it and said go to ER or urgent care. I called urgent care and they said they won't see me because I am 34 weeks so I guess it will be the ER.

I'm going to go take another bath and hope for the best. I really don't want to have it lanced because I remember how much that hurts! Thanks for your input!

Re: Update I never ask medical questions but.....

  • I would do urgent care. I would personally only do L&D if it was related to the baby or my pregnancy. They may find some reason for more concern and send you that way, but that's where I would start at least.

  • You can call up to L&D and they'll tell you what you should do.
  • Just go talk to the nurse at admitting and she should tell you where to go for that.

  • I would try urgent care first. Can you call the urgent care center or the hospital and get advice from them?

  • Urgent Care. It sounds like a boil. If it is a boil try hot compresses over and over. Eventually it will bring all the junk up and it will open and drain.
  • That happened to me years ago and it MRSA! I would get it checked out ASAP!!
  • If you go to the ER they automatically send you to L&D if you are over 20 weeks no matter what the issue is.

It's the same here but L&d already said they can't treat it and are telling me to go to ER.

Ok so go to the ER and tell them that you already spoke to L&D and that its not a pregnancy related issue. Tell them you need a medical doctor to check you out. They may call L&D or send you up there anyway.

Edit: The medical doctors/residents can venture up to L&D and see you there.
  • I've had those! They are terribly painful! I've never had one while pregnant, but they have always refused to lance it because of the risk for infection. They always just gave me antibiotics! Hope it goes away and you feel better soon :(

Lol last time they told me this er still sent me to l&d from er then back to er. Was so annoying.
    That's what I'm afraid of.

That's probably what's going to happen. You have to get it checked out so go get it over with! Good luck!
  • Look up hydradenitis superativa. If this looks like what you have, DO NOT have it lanced. This is a condition which is underdiagnosed and often misdiagnosed by doctors, especially ER doctors. Good luck, I know how excruciating this can be.

  • I'm curious too! I went to urgent care in July and they wouldn't even see me because I was pregnant.
