Job Search / Recruiter Question

After the last few months, I've decided it's going to be time to start looking for a new job. I've got a retention bonus payable Jan. 1, so my goal is to stick it out until at least then. (It had previously been until the kiddo turns one at the end of February and I'm not pumping anymore, but I'm not sure I can make it that long.)

I haven't really started looking, but a recruiter reached out with an opportunity that doesn't seem like a great fit off the bat, but you never know, and I figure I may as well learn more about. How would you handle the retention bonus? Upfront with the recruiter? Or just figure that with the whole recruiter process and holiday season coming, by the time a potential offer is in hand, it really is a moot point, since it would likely be towards year end before an offer was tendered and I could just request a start date after Jan. 1. (Two weeks notice is a formality in my industry - you give it, but they walk you out the same day)

I'm probably making more of this than I need to, since the job doesn't sound like a great fit, but I hate job hunting and hadn't planned on starting the search this soon.

Don't discuss with the recruiter - he or she likely doesn't even know how they could handle a situation like that. Go through the process and if in the end it turns out to be a fit for you and them, this is something you should bring up. At my company we often give sign on bonus's for reasons like this. I am dealing with something similar right now, I have been interviewing for a job and have a bonus pay out in march. I haven't mentioned this yet but plan to if it starts getting serious. My bonus is a lot of money (50k potential) and I am prepared to walk away from it for the right opportunity. We'll just have to see...good luck! P.s. I am an HR exec and have a recruiter report to me...

  • I've not dealt with retention bonus' so I'm not sure about that, but if I infer correctly what it is, I agree, it doesn't need to be brought up with the recruiter until the job offer seems to be becoming more serious and falling around the time of your bonus, then it'd be time to discuss start dates and stuff. I still don't know that I would even mention it, unless they want you to start sooner and such.
