3rd Trimester

Ultrasound

My doctor said I won't have a third trimester ultrasound.. I just thought that's odd bc with my first baby that dr did ultrasounds a lot.. Is it common to not need them now??

Re: Ultrasound

  • P.s my husband said my old dr probably did a lot of ultrasounds just so she could charge more haha! Men..

  • Most people don't get more than a couple ultrasounds the entire pregnancy. Unless there is something wrong, they are not needed. The A/S is usually the last time you will see baby until birth.

    Your husband is right.
  • We'll I guess I'm glad I switched doctors. Thank you!!
  • 29 weeks? I hope your baby is awesome and healthy! Yeah I guess that's the downside of your first pregnancy.. I wish I had known that I would have said no to them! Thank you!
  • I wouldn't have had any more after 20 week except for my "old age" lol (35).

  • Aw that's awesome. Yeah I totally agree with you 100%!
  • Haha! You are not old! And just think how awesome it will be to see your baby again :)
  • I was told I would only have 2 ultrasounds. I had one at 8 and 19 weeks....

Then at 39 weeks, baby was positioned funny (or so the OB thought) and so I got a surprise ultrasound!! Definitely unexpected :)

But yes, 2 is definitely the norm these days.

  • I only had three ultrasounds----one in the very beginning (to rule out ectopic pregnancy), one during my first trimester, and one for the big anatomy scan at 20 weeks.  Hope that helps!
  • Every doctor/midwife I've gone to, the standard is just to do the 20 week ultrasound. For some friends they've also gotten an early ultrasound to confirm dates and heartbeat. Never heard of a routine third trimester ultrasound unless there was some complication!

  • Just chiming in w the others . . . Had the initial one early on then the 20wk scan. Everything i read says any others should be medically necessary.

  • I only had one u/s with my first ( our AS at 20 weeks). With this pg I am high risk so I have had more than I can count. With a healthy pg and no issues/concerns it is completely normal to only have one u/s.

  • @kjenselev- my daughter flipped head down at 36 weeks ( when no one said she would) so there is hope!

  • I'll have at least four. 6 weeks, 20, 31, and again soon. Probably because I have gd this time.
  • I've had 4 ultrasounds. The first two were ordered to be sure spotting wasn't caused by any problems with the placenta. The third was the standard anatomy scan (and it lasted 90 minutes-little guy would NOT be still long enough for the tech to measure anything). The third trimester was a growth scan while being monitored for preeclampsia. I think seeing him moving around during that one actually helped lower my blood pressure because it was a relief to see SOMETHING going right at that point. (I've since returned to safe BP numbers and have less monitoring).

  • I have had five, and I have one more in two weeks.  I think that is two more than I normally would have had.  My OB always does one at 8 weeks, then the NT scan around 12 weeks, then the A/S, and then at 34-35 weeks.
  • I had a dating scan/to rule out chorio carcinoma at 6 weeks. NT scan at 12 weeks. Anatomy anomoly scan at 18 weeks. I could opt for a size scan soon, maybe 32-34 weeks, but midwife thinks baby is a good size, so no need. I may have one just to 'prove' to all the haters that a tiny bump at 30 weeks is OK, but I don't give a shit what people think of my body any more, so I might just let them worry. I'll no doubt have a 9lb like my aunt, who didn't really show much either.

Yep, that is me! Lots of things I wouldn't necessarily do for Round 2. The first trimester screening definitely comes to mind....
  • My doctor said they do a routine on at about 36 weeks. I think this is just to check size and position.
