Cleaning ears

My second question of the day. So I clean DD ears about 2-3 times a week. With those special baby q-tips. Well when we went to her 4 month check up and the doctor saw in her ear. She had a HUGE ear wax ball in there! He left the room and came back with a special looking stick and which he inserted in her ear and took the wax out. She did not cry or anything. Well she keeps rubbing her ear and I remember I have not cleaned them all week and I turn my little light on and look in her ear! Eeew! Def needs to be cleaned. But now I'm wondering what if she has that ball of ear wax again and this is why she is rubbing it. Has this happened to anyone? Can I buy that tool the doctor used to clean her ears myself? TIA.

Re: Cleaning ears

  • The thing with q-tips is that you can push down the wax even further and it will gather up inside the ear. I would clean the outside of the ear, and I have only stuck in a very very small portion of the qtip in his ear (regular one not baby kind) and twist it in a circular motion inwards (like screwing a screw), but I do not push it in very much at all. I have gotten so much wax out of one ear when he was teething on that same side. At his 6 month check up the doctor complimented on his clean ears. lol

I would be too scared to stick anything in his ears. What about the wax vac? Lol

Is that real? Or is that a joke?
  • ENT docs have little wax vacuums. They are amazing. Also, agree with above Qtip comments... ears will naturally expel wax, so sticking a Qtip in there often jams it back it. The little plastic earwax loops are awesome but really should be used with an otoscope.

  • I agree with not using q-tips.  Dr's say never stick anything in your ears!  NEVER at any age.  I use q-tips :( but I will not use them on LO.

I read that if it is problematic the dr can give ear drops that will help with the wax :)

  • I asked many pediatrician about this and she said you want some wax to help prevent ear infections. She pretty much told me to leave the inner ear alone. I will gently scrape out any small bits with my pinkie but we've never had huge chunks before.
  • I work for an ENT office. You do not want to use q-tips in your babies eat or your own for the matter. If the wax is bad enough we have special tools to remove it. Some wax is not bad unless it is making lo's hearing decrease. The wax also helps with not getting ear infections as pp said. When it starts to drain or a different color than normal is when you need to have it looked at.

  • I only wipe his ears with a washbcloth at bath time but I don't stick anything down his ears. At his last appointment my pedi cleaned some wax out of his ear so he could look down there but he said it was no big deal.
