That's it?

Since LO started DC, I've been trying to figure out how much breastmilk to put in bottles, since she is EBF at home.  Well, it seems that 2.5oz is what she drinks! I'm that person who was saying awhile back how frequently LO eats because she seems to want to snack/graze all of the time.  So while at DC she is taking about four 2.5oz bottles over the course of about 9 hours.  Listening to how much other babies drink, this does not seem like much. LO is gaining weight appropriately. I guess I'm just wondering if this seems unusual. I'm fine with her eating this way, just curious if we are an entity of our own. TIA

Re: That's it?

  • Ehhhh. Hmmmm not sure about this one. She is gaining appropriately based on feeding from the boob or have has she been weighed since starting DC? It seems a little light and I know all babies are different, yada yada. But I am sure DC would tell you if it is not enough, right?

  • I started out doing 4 oz bottles, but she just will not take more than 3oz. Even doing 3 oz bottles she often doesn't finish or if she does, Dc feels like they are force feeding her. I pack an extra bottle just in case she needs more. Since starting dc she gained 3lbs (in a 2 month period). Could I possibly have very high caloric BM? (I ask half jokingly). LO still wakes up a few times at night to eat...

  • The rule of thumb is about 1 to 1.5 oz per hour, so while 2.5 oz at a time isn't a lot, it seems like enough in total. Does your LO eating a lot in the evenings or overnight to compensate? If she's happy and gaining weight and having plenty of wet and dirty diapers, I wouldn't worry. My girls don't eat crazy amounts either.

  • Just a hunch, but she is probably not eating a full amount at DC because she is waiting for the boob. She is probably only eating enough to take the edge off hunger.

FWIW, this is just my opinion based on what other people have said on this BMB for the last 5 months. I don't have any personal experience to back it up.

  • My LO used to do the same thing when we were only using the bottle every once in awhile/just starting it. Then one day he just started eating 5-7 ounce bottles. Is your LO still getting used to the bottle? Maybe she just needs a little more time to get used to it.

  • From what I've read- BF babies take about an ounce an hour. So your LO is taking 10 oz in 9 hours, so that's pretty average :)

My DD is at daycare for about 10 hours and she takes 12 oz during that time, in three 4 oz bottles, about 3 hours apart. 4 oz is about what I produce and I pump about every three hours.

How much are you getting when you pump, and how frequently are you pumping?

  • I EBF and I pump through the day sometimes and my LO only takes 2.5-3 at a time. She likes to eat frequently. Only time she will take more is before bed.

5-7 ounces per feeding sounds like a ton for a BF baby! How frequently does your LO eat? I know every baby is different.

  • I made the mistake of freezing my stash in 4-5 oz bags so I waste 1.5 ounces every time. It breaks my heart.

Waste? Why don't you thaw it overnight in the fridge and just warm up what you need? The milk will keep in the fridge for 24 hours.
Edit - 24 hours from the time it is thawed.

  • @wmorgan003 I tend to only need it when I run low which isn't all the time so I end up having to thaw it fast. I'm dim at times so even when I've known I would need it I've still done the same thing. I think I keep refusing to accept that my supply is a little low.

  • She is pretty used to the bottle. We've been giving her a bottle since she was just a few days old because we needed to supplement at first.

I pump three times a day at work and generally get a total of 6oz each time between both breasts.

  • Not to post hijack but my milk smells really soapy when I thaw it and I've heard this can happen to frozen milk. Anything I can do to stop this? I am going away for a whole day soon and need to have a supply.

  • I think scalding it??

  • @lax the soapy smell is excess lipase. If LO doesn't mind it and drinks it anyway, you don't have to do anything. But if she refuses it, then scalding immediately after pumping will stop it from getting a soapy smell.

  • @lolalipsy are you a cereal person? You can always use the extra to mix some cereal or to purée some food. Not sure if you're BLW or not. OP, I think your ounces sound right from what I've read about BF babies. My LO tends to do about 5 oz when she eats every 2 hours....but she also goes a good 8 hours at night without feeding. I also haven't consistently given bottles though since I start back to work tomorrow. We shall see!

  • @surpriseaddition I've given her cereal but tend to just stick with fruits and veggies. I'm going to start with oatmeal again so I'll use the extra for that. It breaks my heart to see it wasted. I actually put some in the fridge to thaw last night so no wastage today ;)
