Temper Tantrums

DD's turning 1 next week. This week she's miss sassy, throws herself to the floor if we take something away & shrieks if we say no. I didn't know one year olds threw tantrums, I thought it was more of an 18 month - 2 or 3 thing. I've read Happiest Toddler & it doesn't seem to be working. Ideas??

Re: Temper Tantrums

  • Sorry I'm no help here but DD is 10 1/2 months and threw one today. I thought I had a little more time until that happened, but she bit me in the midst of it all. I didn't know what to do.

  • With my older one, she threw fits when she was tired, wanted attention, and...that's about it. I would either try laying her down, or ignoring her tantrum. It has worked for us, but other kids are more persistent.

It sucks, because they are too young still to try and talk to them to calm them down, so it's more of a "let it run it's course" type of situation. If it's in a public place, we leave. If it is at home, I would set her in her crib and let her cry for a few minutes. She would either calm down, or pass out.

  • At this age they simply can not conceive of a reason why they can't play with something, which is why they get so upset.  The bad news is there's obviously no reasoning with them, the good news is they forget really quick.  Just distract them with something else that's fun and they get over it :)
  • We usually ignore ours. She is one this week and has resorted to throwing herself backwards onto the ground. I try to console or distract her and if she continues (which she usually does for another 10 minutes of laying in the floor kicking and crying) I just ignore her and she usually crawls off or play of comes over to sit with me when she is over it. Good luck :)

This. Distract & redirect is the only thing that works for DS.

  • Yup, agree with ignoring and distraction.  DD mostly does it because she wants me to pick her up, not necessarily because I'm saying "no" or taking something away from her.  She's even started to bang her head on the floor.  I either ignore it, or pick her up, snuggle her for 20 seconds, and then put her back on the floor in the middle of a pile of toys.
  • See siggy pic. DD throws tantrums all.the.time. They don't last long because she's already learning that they don't get her the attention she desire, I pretty much ignore her if I know she doesn't actually need anything.

Totally random and outdated, but I saw the link in your siggy. I am obsessed with your blog. I have been reading it for quite some time now!
