Switching Formula

So I talked to the nurse line already and they said it was pretty normal for an infant to be spitty or have an upset stomach when switching formula. DD has reflux and was very uncomfortable and spitting up a lot, even on Zantac. We switched from Similac soy to Gerber Good Start Gentle after doing a lot of research on formulas. Today is her first day on just the Gerber and while she doesn't seem to have any discomfort anymore, she's spitting up more, like all of it.

I know the nurse line said it's normal to spit up etc but does this seem excessive to anyone? Has anyone switched formula and had the same thing? I'll obviously call again if she doesn't get better but I'm really hoping this formula works because she seems much happier and in less pain.

Re: Switching Formula

  • My baby spits up a lot too and has reflux. We put her on Enfamil AR and have noticed less spit up. We use the playtex vent air bottles, which seems to help with gassiness and spit up too. When we switched formulas I didn't notice more spit up.

  • We tried Enfamil AR as well as Similac Sensitive, Spit up, and the soy and she just seemed so uncomfortable all the time and cried during feedings. She is actually happy now on Gerber but I'm worried she's spitting up too much now. We have some playtex air vent bottles so maybe I'll give those a try today.
  • When I had to start supplementing I started out using Gerber Good Start and she would spit up a whole feeding once everyday or two. I switched to Enfamil and she does still spit up sometimes but its always just a tiny amount, never the whole thing like on the GGS.

  • We were using Similac Sensitive due to belly pain/gas. This was alternated with pumped breast milk. At LO's 1 month appt. they suggested that was use Gerber Soothe instead because the Sensitive didn't have lactose. While on the Similac, she barely spit up (I'm talking 2-3 times a week at max). As soon as we switched to the Gerber, she started spitting up a few times in a day. I gather that the difference is that this has the lactose. I'm not really sure. But we did see a difference when changing. Though I will say, despite the spitting up, she is much happier and instead of frequent cries from gas, we get a day here or there where we get sharp cries because of the gas.

  • We're on day two of using only Gerber Good Start Gentle and I'm definitely seeing a difference so far. She's spitting up a lot still but she seems to be happier and in much less or actually no pain. She hardly cries, eats better, happy and alert while awake, napped during the day, slept almost 9 hours at night, and finally had a normal soft poop instead of being hard and constipated!

I have no idea if this is actually going to keep up but if it does, I will be thrilled. We'll just have to see how it goes but I'm really hoping this keeps her happy and continues as it has been.
  • Maybe my LO has an iron stomach, but we use whatever formula we got in the mail as samples: Enfamil, Similac, Gerber. She doesn't show any preference to any of them and is fine on all of them. We also breastfeed.

That's what I thought, I'm hoping after she adjusts that all the good changes stick. She's so much better and I don't care about the spit up if it means she's happier, she's still spitting up less than before anyways.
