LO fussy at 9 months?

hi ladies - so sorry i've been MIA. Work has been so crazy for me lately and with the babes crawling now, life is constantly on the move! congrats to all the recent BFP's...i've been checking TB when I shut the light off at night just to check for some good posts before bed!

so let me preface this question by saying that my LO's have had a pretty crappy couple weeks: they got their first ever diaper rash (which now our pedi thinks might be chemical reactions to Pampers so we've switched diaper brands) which ended up getting all open sore-ish and totally painful. Now those are pretty much gone but DD is cutting two top teeth and DS is cutting a lower, not to mention the pedi also said to expect his molars within the next month (holy cow). To top things off they got their first ever cold last week and are almost totally fine but still some random coughing and wheeziness. However - that all being said, the past 3-4 weeks have been so nutty. I feel like we went from having literally the two most chill, well behaved babies (i know i know i hate it when people say that crap! i'm quoting our nanny and friends that come over because they laugh and say "you guys can't complain about having twins you barely know there are babies in the room!") to having babies that are crying a lot and super whiny all of a sudden. they hate being changed (normal), hate having their dipes changed, cry when we put them down, cry in their high chairs...so far the only "happy" place is either in our laps or the bath together. i'm just wondering where our sweet tempered kids went and when the heck they're coming back hahaha. please someone whose child/ren are older than 9 months tell me this is a stage? i'm starting to fear that our good natured children are gone forever! don't get me wrong, i am so blessed they truly are the sweetest kids and i know all babies are allowed to be fussy and let their feelings be known. i think i let DH stress me out a lot too because i see the stress in his face and it puts a lot of pressure on me as the mom, like i'm doing something wrong. do you think it's just all the stuff above (teething, cold etc) combined with a little separation anxiety?

  • I remember 9 months being pretty difficult too. I remember finally breaking down and sleep training her then bc I couldn't handle cranky all day and up all night. It gets better. Plus they really have had a lot going on. Those diaper rashes are really painful.

  • Gosh, @amd1982, you and your LOs have sure been through a lot lately!

M usually gets cranky when he is sick, or teething.  Are you LOs getting enough sleep? M gets super cranky if he doesn't sleep enough. We also went through about a week of crying/whining when he developed separation anxiety.

I think, in babies, everything is just a phase, unless you don't think they are getting enough sleep?  Hope this passes soon.

  • I also feel like 9/10 mos was really rough. The increase in mobility, pick up in teething, and burst of comprehension throws their little brains for a loop. My boys started getting aggressive with one another and began stealing toys/ freaking out while playing. I had to separate them quite a bit during that period. And, the diaper changing tantrums...holy crap. It got a bit better around 11 months and they can really communicate now. I also remember reading something about a 8-10 month sleep regression.

Sorry I don't have any tips, but I can send along some encouragement. One fussy baby is hard, two fussy babies can feel impossible. Hope things improve ASAP!!

  • Ditto what @ruthie04 said about diaper change! Diaper change was a nightmare at our house for several months! M would just flip over/roll/protest nonstop!  But around 10.5-11m, he settled down and became much more cooperative most of the time. He will lie on the changing pad until we put on the tabs, then he rolls over and crawls away.  Now, putting clothes and pants on him is another story...

  • @pb_bride- that is exactly what my boys do! The second I get the second tab in place, they roll! They are completely still until that one tab! I'm then left chasing them around to snap the onesie/put on pants while keeping the other baby from snatching the dirty diaper! Now that we taught them how to stay still for the diapering part, how do we teach them that the whole process ends with pants on?

And, @amd1982, I was thinking about what really helps cheer my LOs up- top40 pop and lift the flaps/slide books. They LOVE nsync and usher (I know, judge away) and will start dancing no matter what is going on. Seriously, it's amazing what this combination does to help. I also used certain toys for diaper changes only so it would keep them distracted (little things like electronic keys, toy phone/remote controls were favs). They never got to play with these unless they were being changed. HTH!

  • Hang in there! 9/10 months was a really rough patch for us, as well. I recommend wine :) I hope they are feeling better soon, because it certainly can't help!
