Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Water

Do any of you give your LOs water yet?  My pedi said that I could give him small amounts of water when he's eating solids.  I gave him a bottle with 1 1/2 oz in it while he was eating and he ate about 1/2 an ounce.

If you do give them water, how much?

Re: Water

  • The pedi recommended giving LO tap or nursery water in a sippy cup to give her fluoride starting at 6 months. I got her a Playtex cup with a straw. I fill it to about 4 oz so it's easier for her to get to the water with the straw. When she drinks, a lot of it spills out of her mouth, but I know she's drinking because I hear her swallowing. I think in the end she drinks maybe one ounce. At this point I probably wouldn't want her to drink more than 2 ounces throughout the day so it doesn't fill her tummy too much, but that's just me, not anything I've heard or read.

  • We received conflicting information from our pediatrician (we go to a practice with a bunch of drs).  One said that we should definitely be giving her water every day, the other said that we shouldn't because her kidneys aren't ready to process it yet.  We give her an ounce or two every couple of days, but she's not really into it.  She hasn't figured out the sippy cup yet.
  • Thanks ladies!

  • I give my 8 month old just a little bit of the Gerber "baby" water after she eats any type of solids. She drinks a little bit in a sippy cup.
  • I tried the sippy cup but he was like what is this?  I'll keep trying though!  I'm not too worried about it, I was just curious because I'd heard conflicting reports on water in infants

  • For those wanting to use a sippy cup.... My DS has never wanted to take a bottle, but we had to give him some prune juice this weekend. He couldn't suck the bottle so I gave him a Nuby sippy cup & he instantly loved it!!
  • We also offer DD water in a sippy cup, but not everyday.  she loves to play with it but not sure if she really takes much water in!

  • We started offering water around 8 months in a sippy, neither one of them was really in to it until they discovered straws about a month ago.  We are now 10 months and we offer a sippy (the kind with a soft straw) at each meal.  They will maybe drink an ounce or two at most.
  • We put about 3 oz of water in a small bottle - tried the sippy and straw cups & DD is not ready for them - each morning and offer it to DD after she has her purees and usually after a nap to get rid of the dry mouth.  Sometimes she'll drink the whole 3 oz in a day and sometimes she won't.  We use water from our Pur filter on the faucet since our Pedi said that's ok - I was buying the nursery water and he said not to waste the money.
  • I offer a straw cup with water after cereal or solids - sometimes he'll take some good sips, other times he'll just play with it. I just give regular Brita-filtered tap water, same as we drink.

  • Ds loves ice in one of those mesh feeders due to the 4 teeth he has cut. I don't know how much water is in a cube but he has 1 or 2 a day.
