Baby Names

Names you liked until you actually heard them IRL

On paper a lot of names sound good, but then when you hear them in real life they just don't role off the tongue like you expect them to. What names did this for you?

Mine are:
Cora
Lucy
Sebastian

Re: Names you liked until you actually heard them IRL

  • DS is Sebastian, lol- mine would include Bronwyn, Arden, and a lot of boy names that end in a hard t sound, like Brett or Matt- oddly I do love Everett, which I saw was your little guys name :)

  • I think Penelope.

I like the idea of it and I like the way it looks.  I also really like the NN Poppy.  The full name sounds really clumsy to me though.

  • All the really frilly girly names apply to this for me. Gabriella, Annalise, Serafina or Isabella. They look so pretty but I can't stand them IRL

  • Funny, Cora is one of mine, too. It was actually on our list and then a friend named her baby Cora and I realized I didn't care for it all that much after all.

Lorelei. I love it but most people sound awkward saying it. It's like the word "rural" which I can't say well so Rory would be hard too.

Callum is another one for me.  Love it - great Irish name.  Just don't like saying it.

We have Callum on our list, is it the UM that sounds weird??? I still love the name. So DH and I are going back and forth with Callum and Liam

Yeah I can see where Colin comes in.
I think DH likes Liam, we loved that name for years and the popularity doesn't really bother us.
    Such a tough decision.
  • This is a little opposite of what you asked but I have some names that I didn't think I liked until I heard them IRL. The biggest one being, Fiona. I never cared for that name much until I hear it used, it's really adorable! Also, Hazel and Ruby.

  • Priscilla.. I think it has more to to with the nick name she would end up being called "prissy" and I don't think I could swallow that

  • I loved Aurora, and when I mentioned it to DH he was totally on board, until we realized that we both sounded tongue-tied saying it out loud.

  • My DD was an x-chromosome away from being named Zachary.  While I like this name on other boys, I am really glad we didn't wind up naming our kid this.  Partially it's because I couldn't deal with the sound "Zack" all the time.

When DS came along 4 years later we picked a different name for him.

    DS, born 8/25/04 -- 7th grade
  • Sebastian

This name was a runner up for our first son. I'm glad we didn't choose it. I don't like having to repeat it as often as I thought.

Aurora is hard to say and Evangeline- there's just something I don't like about it when said out loud. Also Evelyn, I hate it. They are all nice, normal names that are perfectly fine for other people to use. I just personally dislike them and how they sound.
