When did you give LO a blanket?

We live in the upper midwest and it gets quite chilly in DD's room, even with the heat on. We dress her in warm pjs and socks, but she still feels cold to me when I go in there in the morning.

At what age did you give LO a blanket? Did you take any special precautions with it (i.e. tucking it into the mattress)? Did you ever have a scare where they got it tangled around their face?

LO is 18 months old and we still haven't tried a blanket. He is a major wiggle worm. I like the idea of putting a fleecy blanket down to lay on top of! We put him in those summer infant sleep sacks that zip up, like a wearable blanket. He's the the XL size, so I guess when he grows out of it that's it. They have them in cotton and fleece.

Some time in March this past year we started putting a hand knit blanket in with DS at night because his room was cooler than the rest of the home. I purposefully did that blanket because our friend who made it must have used larger knitting needles for it because it had larger openings in the pattern, so I figured if it did happen to go over his head, he could still breathe. Now, we put a quilt on him at night, but is squirms around so much that he's never under it when we go in to his room in the morning.

Around 1 year we gave her a blanket. She sucks on a corner of one. Honestly watching the monitor it ends up on the floor before she's even asleep most nights. I was nervous at first so I gave her receiving blankets. Now I'm less nervous so I do give her a fleece one. She is totally able to grab it and more it away from her face if it were to get close.

I'm glad you asked this question because I've been wondering the same thing! DS is all over the crib at night so we've never given him a blanket. We dress him warmly and try to keep the room warm, and he's a good sleeper - doesn't seem cold, that I can tell. Still, I've been wondering that this winter when it gets cold that it may be time to try a blanket. Good to see how others have handled it!

We gave DS2 a blanket around 9 months...now, at 20 months, he sleeps with probably 4 small fleece blankets in his bed. I cover him when I put him down but by the time I go to bed, he's uncovered and just snuggling with the blanket. I will cover him back up then but it doesn't last very long. I dress him in fleece pajamas with a long sleeve onesie and socks in the winter because I don't think the blanket really does much to keep him warm since he won't stay under it.

DS has had one for months, well before his first birthday. Nothing big or heavy, though. Most of the time it ends up curled up underneath him. It's become his security object and we know he's tired because he'll try to get it out of the crib and rubs the satin edge against his cheek.

Last winter when DD was a baby she slept in a snowsuit in our room. We like to sleep with essentially little to no heat in our room.

This fall/winter I purchased a quilted sleep sack designed for toddlers up to 36months. She is sleeping in her crib now in her own room. We just turned the heat on yesterday, but we only keep it around 65 in the winter and we run a fan in her room so it is still quite cool. I just layer her up...knee socks, long sleeve onsie, fleece footed pj's, and the quilted sleep sack.

We started using a blanket in her crib when she was around a year old, but she won't stay under it at all. she is all over her crib thru the night.

DD has had a blanket since about 13 months, but it doesn't really do much to keep her warm since she rolls all over. Halo makes sleep sacks that have feet holes. I plan to use those over fleece PJs for winter.

My daughter took an interest in blankets shortly after her first birthday - they were a comfort for her and we let her have them.

DS has had one since about 9 months. He's never had an issue. He now sleeps with 2 blankets and usually will just cuddle with one and be covered with the other, although like PP states, once he's sleeping, he rolls around and ends up uncovered but if he cries out at all and I know he could be cold, I go back in and cover him again. He sleeps in fleece pj's but his room is the coldest room in our place.

I can't remember when we first gave it to him, but my son is 13 months old and loves to sleep with a blanket, more for snuggling than warmth. It doesn't worry me whatsoever!

DD sleeps with a muslin receiving blanket as a comfort item but for warmth, we still have her in grobags. Those plus long sleeves keep her warm. I'm not worried about the safety issue, I am just not convinced she'll stay under a blanket at this point.

Our son has slept with a blanket ever since he was able to fling one about when awake (6 months?). Now at 18 months he has at least a half dozen on his bed at all times like a nest, plus his "blankie" that comes downstairs with us during the day. He's built like paul bunyan, though, so he had a lot of strength early on.

My son has slept with a crocheted blanket since about 3 months old. It has large holes so I was never worried. He is 22 months now and takes his "nay net" everywhere with him....I have to sneak it out of his room when he is sleeping so I can wash it or he throws a major fit! He is also in a toddler bed though and has a pillow and regular blanket.

My daughter just got her about a month ago, she's 5 months same crocheted/knitted pattern.

DD has had a small crocheted blanket since about 9mo. It normally ends up balled up in the corner of her crib. I wait until she's deep asleep and rolled onto her stomach to put it on her.

Here comes the horrible mommy comments. I have been giving the twins blankets since they were about 6 months. Both LOVE blankets now. I sometimes walk in to DS still wrapped in his sleeping very peacefully. They won't go to bed without them now.

People need to trust their instincts and stop being overly cautious. If your LO is able to turn their heads and roll over on their own, trust them with a blanket. If you are that concerned do it during nap time so you can keep an eye on them. Once you are confident that they will be just fine, do it at night.

We gave both kids a small blanket around 10 months but honestly it's pointless because it stays on for about a minute. No biggie because we live in Florida so it doesn't get too terribly cold. You may just want to dress your LO warmer.
