Choking on phlegm

I had the scare of my life this morning at 4am. I had just put DS down after his 3am MOTN feed and gotten into bed when I heard him start to softly fuss on the monitor. I figured he was fine and just needed to put himself back to sleep. He fussed for a litle bit but then he let out a single loud terrified shreak (like a night terror yell) followed by frantic kicking. I went in to see what was wrong and when I picked him up he was nearly purple, eyes bulging with snot blocking both nostrils and he couldn't breathe because phlegm was blocking the airway in his throat to the point that he couldnt even cry. It all happened so quickly! I grabbed the aspirator and started suctioning his nose and out of his mouth. He finally let out a cough and started breathing heavily. I had never been more scared in my life. All I could think about was why didn't I take the infant CPR and choking class!!! I steamed him in the shower to loosen up the phlegm and he slept with me the rest of the night. He's fine now. What is so weird is that when I initially put him down after the feed he was breathing just fine! Anyway, if anyone has any other pointers on how to save babies choking on phlegm, please let me know. I was operating on sheer instinct. Thank God it worked.

  • Oh good lord!!! I have a fear of this and suck boogies out every day to try to prevent this. It keeps me going at it when she fights it. :((

So glad your LO is okay!

Why thank you.  The only reason I remember the "love" one is because it was my BFF's birthday.

Thank you! So do you suction every day as prevention regardless if LO is stuffy? I was wondering about this because I don't usually suction him unless I see boogers or he sounds like he has something.

My mom told me to call the pedi to check out his chest. I'll email her and see what she thinks happened. He doesn't seem to have a chest cold...

Thanks ladies! Mommy instincts indeed. DH slept through the entire thing! When I yelled for him to wake up he did the whole, "ok I'm getting up" while still laying in bed thing. He's lucky I didn't smother him with his pillow. He finally did get up and out of bed at a snails pace after DS was in the clear and commented, "wow his eyes are super red and really puffy! You ok little buddy?" Ugh! Love that man and his relaxed demeanor usually but sometimes he needs to learn when to kick it into gear!!!
  • This happened to my LO just last night. It doesn't sound like it was to this extreme but we were playing on the blanket and all of a sudden he started to look startled and took a gasp and was kicking his legs so I picked him right up and patted his back and turned him on his side and he coughed and all that came out was saliva. he did have some boogers in his nose that i suctioned out after. It FREAKED ME OUT. He has acid reflux and is on meds but this was hours after he ate so I don't think it had to do with that. I was terrified and so was he. I could cry just thinking about terrified look on his face. Glad LO is ok

  • Wow. That's scary. You did such quick thinking. No advice. Sorry.
  • Awe how scary. Max choked a lot during his cold, and it was really scary. I got in the habit of spraying a little saline in his nose before bed time most nights, and it really cuts down on the congestion.

  • How scary!  I'm glad everything is okay!
  • Wow, good quick reaction! My LO has had nasal congestion for several weeks and he gags almost nightly on the drainage but every time I try to suck his nose I barely get anything out! I have been using the nose frida but am considering going back to the good old fashioned bulb to see if that works any better.
