Speedwalking contractions??

So I started my daily speedwalks, and sometimes I feel like my lower abdomen and sides get hard and kinda hurt, but I can still manage to walk... Is it normal for those moms out there that have exercised during pregnancy??? Or are they like mini contractions??? Really don't know how to define them? But would be nice to know if it's ok.. Planning to ask my OB, but dont want to wait longer...

Re: Speedwalking contractions??

  • You may be having Braxton Hicks contractions. Typically, if you are getting a lot of tightening or pain it's probably your body's way of telling you to slow down a little and/or get more water in. Try doing that as you exercise and see if it makes a difference. Of course you should also mention to your OB as well.

  • Sounds like BH to me, too. I started getting them on walks around 19wks with DD. This time around I'm skipping the walks because with DD mine turned into real contractions on a walk around 27wks and I had a PTL scare. My ute seems much less irritated this time around but I'm a Paranoid (couch potato) Polly this time around. (Well...as much of a couch potato as one can be with a crazy active 13mo to chase after.)

  • I had this last pregnancy, enough that I was told to just stop walking also (later on when it got worse). So far so good in this pregnancy..

  • I had them last pregnancy if I pushed it a bit too hard when I worked out. I'm on pelvic rest this time so I haven't had anything that would cause it. If you are a regular exerciser, you may just need to reevaluate your exertion levels and tone them back a bit. Your body may just be telling you to slow it down a bit. I will note that as I got farther along last time, they got more intense if I pushed it too hard. They also were a little less noticeable if I wore the support belt once I was bigger (30+weeks). i think it just took some of the weight off.
  • I'm so glad you posted this. I went out for a walk today and started feeling alot of tightening and pain. But I didn't come and go. It just stayed constant. And then my back started hurting pretty bad as well. It really scared me....I googled Braxton hicks when I got back but everything I found said that Braxton hicks would not be painful??

  • Out of curiosity, what do they feel like?

I went for a brisk 30-minute walk during my lunchtime today, and I got horrible side aches about 10 minutes in. I'm wondering if it's cause I drink a lot of water throughout the day. I tried to slow down my walking a bit to alleviate the side ache.

BH contractions can be uncomfortable, but I suppose compared to the 'real thing' they wouldn't be considered painful. More of an uncomfortable annoyance.
