Parenting after a Loss

It's getting worse - now Neocate (VENT)

Well ladies, there is a reason Mason is so damn fussy - he has what appears to be a pretty severe milk allergy (along with his lovely reflux). We had him on Nutramigen for the last few weeks and thought we had things figured out. He started STTN (on and off) and seemed all around happier. We upped his reflux meds and thought we had it all figured out. Then we noticed in the last several days that the spitting up has gotten way worse (not pain, but volume), So we went to the pedi again yesterday for a reevaluation, and sure enough, there is blood in his poop again. So she put us on Neocate, which is even more broken down than Nutramigen, and wayyyyy more expensive. They don't even have it at the pharmacy - we have to order it. And we have to go to a GI to get and escopy done to confirm pedi's prognosis.?

?I feel so sad for Mason. He's had such a rough start. And honestly, I feel really sad for us too. I know I should just be thankful that we have an otherwise healthy, beautiful baby, but I'm in that funk of wondering why rare occurances always seem to happen to us. I'm back to wondering why I had a placenta abruption with my last pregnancy (rare), and why I had placenta accrecia with both pregnancies (rare), and why he has this allergy (not too rare, but this severe seems to be). It's supposed to be more likely when there is a strong family history, and we have ZERO allergies in either of our families. And DHs job isn't going well and I'm a SAHM, so we literally cannot afford this huge added expense. They didn't even have Neocate samples at the pedi because she only has one other baby who needs it, so they gave that family all their samples. And, oh yeah, we're going to Mexico tomorrow with DHs family (which I was NEVER thrilled about having to take a 3 month old), and the timing couldn't be worse now that we had to transition him. We were only able to get our hands on 2 cans of this formula (had to go to Children's Hospital for it), and we need to find more today because I'm not getting on that plane to Mexico without more than enough formula to get him through the trip.

?AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for letting me vent. I'm so farking deflated right now.?

  • I'm so sorry you're going through all of this, but at least you've gotten t figured out & hopefully he'll start to feel better soon.?
  • I'm so sorry you're going through this.  Zack is on Neocate for a severe MPI and other undiagnosed food allergies as well.  Have you spoken to you insurance company yet?  Some insurance WILL cover it, but sometimes you really have to fight for it.  I know here in Minnesota it's required by law that insurance cover the cost.  Not only is our formula paid for 100%, it's also delivered to our door by the caseload.

Call your insurance company and start asking questions.  I believe there is also info on the neocate website on how to help get assistance in paying for it.  Our doc also suggested we look into WIC (we did not qualify though) for help paying for it.  In the meantime, there are often better prices on neocate on craigslist or ebay.

I know it's frustrating and overwhelming, but Zack has been on Neocate for 3 months now and is truly a different child.  I had to wean him from BFing and I was heartbroken, but it was SO worth it to see a happy baby again.
