Bottle measurements

Has anyone noticed that the bottle measurements from manufacturer to another don't always match? My pump bottles are Ameda.. My storage bottles are Medela.. And I use Breastflow bottles to feed..and every time I transfer the milk measures differently. WTF. Which one is right?!?

Re: Bottle measurements

  • Yes! My storage bags say I have an oz more than my medela bottles. And the nuk bottles we've been trying are in the middle.
I just guesstimate depending what container I'm using. You'd think those measurements would be standardized, but nooooooooo.

  • Yes, and it's pretty annoying! Lol! :-w

  • I used a standard liquid measuring cup to get an accurate measure. We FF and use two different brands of bottles...I marked with a Sharpie the accurate oz lines myself. Just an idea!
  • Yeah- I don't trust the storage bags. Even when I open up the fold so it's flat it still seems off.

I've noticed a different in my medela bottles. The 5oz bottles measure slightly more than the 8oz bottles. What a mess!

  • I fill the feeding bottle with the right amount. So if my small medela bottle shows 3 oz and her eating bottles shows 3.5, I dump .5 back into the small bottle.

  • For DD I used Medela bottles to pump into and then a few different types to feed from. I always used the Medela bottles to measure with if I was getting her bottles ready for daycare so I knew they all had the same amount.
  • I use the small Medela graduated cylinders for storing milk/bringing milk to daycare. I pump into a bigger bottle, then distribute the milk into the smaller graduated cylinder tubes. I put exactly 2.5oz in each, and the daycare will put a full bottle and .5oz into one of the Tommy Tippee feeding bottles. I find those to be more accurate as it marks on the side for each mL and every .25oz. Even the bigger Medela bottles to pump into aren't accurate, and I gave up on the bags a while ago.

  • The sad thing is.. I don't even use the bags... the medela storage I use is the graduated cylinders as well... and they're still different from the 5 oz Medela.. and the 4 oz Ameda..  my head hurts. I'm just going to stop thinking about it and eyeball it... within reason of course :-)

  • I go by the madela bottles that came with my pump for measurement and write that amount on the bags!

This is what I do as well!
  • @brown214, Just be aware. I have noticed those bottles overestimate how much milk is actually in them. Those are the ones I pump into before distributing into the smaller, Medela graduated cylinders. They always say I pump more than I really did. Such a letdown sometimes, lol

Well that's a bummer! I have noticed that be cause it doesn't always line up with my tommy tippee. Let's hope it all works out once I return to work!
