Honey

Where are we at on this? My Dr. Told me not before 2 years but I thought I had previously heard after one? Is there a honey dosage that's acceptable? Or do I need to go all honey free products like PB with no honey?

Questions that keep me awake...

  • Here's what I understand...

It's not a magical line where before 1 it's unsafe and after 1 it's fine.  So recommendations are going to vary.    The risk in honey is that it has live botulism spores in varying concentrations.     Big people have no problem defending against those botulism spores so we're fine.   Small people or people with weaker immune systems may not successfully defend and could get sick.

Since E's on the small and puny side, I'm playing safe for a little while longer on larger amounts of honey (pbj/honey sandwiches, etc)  but am not at all concerned with baked goods with honey in them or recipes that may call for honey in a sauce.

    That make sense?

  • We were told after 1 it was fine.  The only thing our pedi recommended waiting on was whole nuts and shellfish.  She recommend @ 2 years for shellfish.
  • my son eats everything, nuts, soy, honey, peanuts.... loves them all.  gobbles it up!  No issues.

  • The general recommendation is 12 months...but I have read 18 months before.  I don't give LO straight honey but I don't worry about her having something that has honey as an ingredient...ie. whole wheat bread baked with honey.

  • Our pedi told us at the last appointment that she can eat anything now, including honey.

  • My pedi didn't care, but she was concerned about the amount of sugar in honey, so she said we should avoid it anyway for that reason.
