Ok early childhood teachers help plz

We went to a parent teacher conference today about Caleb. His teacher was happy overall w his abilities. He's full speed ahead and really motivated to learn new lessons with everything except writing. He's super duper into the math and science and practical life lessons

My kid won't write or color. I have tried 690542159 times to get him to color, draw, write, etc but he's not interested and says he's not good at it :'(

What can I do? Should I push for an OT eval?

  • Have you tried other ways to write besides paper/pencil? Shaving cream, salt writing (put a small layer of salt on a cookie sheet or tray, and write letters with your finger), or writing letters on a chalkboard and having him use a q-tip dipped in water to erase the letters are some fun ways to practice writing. Using an easel can help, because that angle is sometimes easier than writing flat. Also, using thinner pencils (vs the thicker ones they market for kids) is better for early writers. FYI, I am not an OT but I work closely with one ;)

  • Thanks for the tips. His teacher did mention that he may be ambidextrous. He is at Montessori and they do sandpaper letters with a chalkboard. He's supposed to feel the letter and then write it. She said he will feel with his left hand and write with his right. Maybe that's confusing?

I'm also going to take him for an eye exam just in case and because he's never had one. Mother fail :)

  • Lots of great suggestions! I teach k and we use a great program called Handwriting Without Tears, like a lot of prior suggestions its very hands on and tactile. It starts the kids building letters with wooden pieces (or you can make them with cardstock), then onto chalkboards with water, then chalk. I love the program and the kids are very successful with it. Its pricey but you could probably get everything you need to know from blogs, Pinterest etc (or pm me if you're interested!).

  • Would you mind PMing the info please ? :)

  • DS (4.5) is pretty uninterested in coloring/drawing/artistic type things.  He is a much bigger fan of math.  I have found that it's just him - he will do the bare minimum required and then go to something he likes.  Can't really blame him for that.

I just make sure he's doing what he's supposed to be doing and let it go.  For example, he colored a pumpkin with two colors while his friend (girl) made this awesome colorful artwork.  DS, however, can do addition and is now interested in subtraction.

    I figure he's the practical type :)
