Baby Wearing

I know I'm a little late in that game but I was wondering if you ladies could recommend a comfortable, secure, and affordable carrier.  I need something adjustable because I plan to use it for my DD and one of my daycare kiddos who needs some extra snuggles while I tend to the other kiddos. My DD is a small 9 month old and the other LO is a bigger 6 month old. Another obstacle to throw in the ring, I am a bigger momma and my DH wants to use the carrier as well but he is a little twiggy thing :) TIA ladies!!

Re: Baby Wearing

  • Ergo would be my choice.  My sitter is a bigger lady and she has had luck with it too.

  • I agree with the above poster. Love my Ergo!!
  • Another vote for the ergo! It's very adjustable for caregiver and baby and good to carry a kid up to 40lb so you should be able to get some life out of it even though you are just now starting out.

  • Just chiming in with a different opinion: I liked the Lillebaby Complete better than the Ergo; it was more comfortable for me and has more options for positioning baby.

Do you have a babywearing association around your area? Might be worth a google; we have one in Boston and they have meetings regularly where you can try out (and even borrow) a huge array of baby carriers. Good luck!

  • I am going to throw in mei tai. I love it. Very comfy and easy to put on and off. I just need to start practicing back wearing!

  • I love my Ergo! But it's the only one I have much experience with so...
  • Thank you ladies for weighing in. There are no baby wearing, cloth diapering, any time of 'granola' groups around here. I wing it from things I learn from you ladies, online reviews or random people I run into that do the same. I tried a chicco carrier from target because it was amazingly cheap on clearance and I just wanted to try baby wearing. It was HORRIBLE!!!!! I felt like DD was going to fling out of it anytime I made a sudden movement. It was not comfortable for me and kept sliding around. I also couldn't see anything in front of me so it defeated the purpose of being hands free to get things done. We are on on pretty tight budget so I will look into an Ergo on Craigslist or a swap spot. Thanks again ladies!!

The attachment parenting board may qualify as a 'crunchy granola' group. They chat about carriers pretty often.
  • Yet another vote for Ergo. I've also used a Baby Björn in the past (before I knew it was bad) and a woven wrap. I'm sticking to my Ergo. It's great.

  • Just to chime in, I am not sure how 'big' you are, but I bought an Ergo and I am a size 18 and it barely fits. It isn't comfortable for me either and I think it's due to my size and it not fitting the way it should on a skinnier person. Keep that in mind, just because someone is bigger and it works for them, might not for you depending on the shape of your body.

  • I second the Mei Tei idea.  I actually bought mine used at one of the big consignment sales.  I wore DS3 all over Disney last month in it and was comfortable the entire time.

  • I'm about an 18 these days and have two main carriers I use - boba and infantino mei tai.  I actually love them both.  The boba is nice when out because I don't have to worry about dragging the straps all over the ground (plus I'm in Seattle where it's wet 75% of the time).  The mei tai though is so much more comfortable and customizable.  I love both and usually use whichever one is in the house at any given moment, but if I had both handy and was indoors, I'd definitely go for the mei tai.  I do have lots of strap left with the boba though, so I bet it would fit easily for folks 250lbs+.
