Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

18 month dr. appmt.?

From what I can remember, I was told by my doctor that there is no 18 month check-up unless there is some sort of issue. I am noticing, however, on a lot of threads that most of you seem to have had an 18 month appointment. Is this usually a pretty standard doctor visit? I am just wondering if I should call and schedule something since I am a little concerned about DS's verbal development, or at least just speak with him on the phone? I find it odd that we did not have one scheduled when it seems to be standard practice among so many of you folks. Thanks!

  • Our pediatrician scheduled Dd for a routine 18 month visit also.

  • yes, we had an 18 month apt, and so did all my friends with kids.  I would just call and double check, but I would have called anyway especially if I were concerned.
  • Yes, us too.  DD also had a flu shot and the last shot for one of the other series.  Plus an autism screening and conversation about milestones.

  • At our LO's 18 month appointment, he got a round of vaccines, I think the last in a series for Hep A (or B??), flu shot, and one other, and also a vision screening.  I also answered a behavioral questionnaire to screen for potential autism, and the doc did his usual Q and A session.  It's flu season, so if I were you I'd at least want to be sure LO got vaccinated.
  • I find it very odd that your doctor wouldn't have a 18 month appt it is definitely standard.  LO should have a flu shot and DS also received Hep A shot.  As PP said you also talk about developmental milestones and we took a behavioral questionnaire as well.

  • It depends on the pediatrician.  Ours doesn't do a 15 month well appointment unless there is a problem.   I'm ok with that.

  • Yeah, our pediatrician doesn't schedule a 15 month exam but does at 18 months.
  • I find it weird that flu shot is designated at 18M.  This seems like a seasonal thing.  I got my kids flu shots in October, if they were old enough.

Anyway, we have a standard 18M visit.  We do not, however, have a 2.5 year visit.  We go from 2 year old to 3 year old.
