Screaming at my breast

So usually about once a day my little girl screams during a feeding. It's maddening. She will eat normally for about 3 min or so but then stop and st scream like crazy. Ill stop and try to burp her, sometimes successfully, sometimes not, and will sometimes try to switch sides to see if that is what she wants, to no avail. Ugh it's soooooooo frustrating!! My boobs are so full right now and she's not eating enough. Sigh. I can't wait for her to get a bit older so her tummy is more settled.

Re: Screaming at my breast

  • My son did the exact same thing. I survived through that, so hopefully ill make it through this too!

  • We have the same thing happen once or twice a day.  LC said it could be if the flow is too fast or not fast enough.  Started spraying everywhere when she pulled off today so I am guessing it was too fast.

  • I notice she does it more when she swallows weird. She probably hurt her throat or something. I feel terrible for her.
  • It could be because your flow isn't fast enough.  Does it feel like you've let down by the time she starts screaming?  If so, try breast compressions every time she suckles (either grip your breast with your free hand so your thumb is on top and your fingers are below and gently squeeze, or--as I do--just press way above or beside the areola).  Watch closely to see how your LO suckles.  That will cause her to change from the desperate nibbling to the deep gulp nursing.  Good luck!
  • It happens with us occasionally too. Often times I think she is too hungry and eager.
  • This happens to me too, but I have yet to figure out what the cause is. Most of the time I think it's because he needs to burp or needs to pass gas since he is usually straining pretty hard while crying. Although, I have been known to spray him in the face when he pops off so it could be let down issue at times. My LO doesn't always do it, most days are fine, but we've had some rough ones. Hope your LO gets more comfortable soon, it won't last forever :)

  • Mine does this too, it is frustrating. he only does it sometimes and mainly in the middle if the night when I'm fuller so I'm thinking its an over supply issue. I always give up and just heat up a pumped bottle but I suppose you could pump a little bit then put LO back on.

  • Thanks for the replies:) it's always reassuring to know I'm not alone! Somehow it helps. My son did the exact same thing. I went on a crazy elimination diet of rice chicken, millet, and a few other things and I don't think any of that helped. I tried so many things with him, pumping for a min or two before he nursed since my letdown was so strong, burping, compressing, and honestly I don't think I ever figured it out lol. I think he just outgrew it! The hardest thing is the amount of patience it requires in the moment! Praying for this stage to end soon!
  • Do you remember when your son outgrew it? We have the same problem in the late afternoons/evenings

  • I think it was between month 2-3. Our girl is 5 weeks old so I guess we'll see!
  • We had the same problem with DS, he wouldn't latch to my right side and it became engorged. I met with the LC and found out I was letting down fast and furious and LO wasn't ready for it.
