Please tell me if this is a bad idea...back to the swing!

Also posted this in birth month (November 2012)

Hi moms,

I've been struggling with my baby's sleep lately. I'm not sure if it's only teething or a mix of sleep regression/separation anxiety/ leap week. I just don't know. He'll be 11 months next week. He wakes up every night, usually around the same time and would cry and cry and only fall asleep if I'm holding him. This could go on for over an hour. I can handle it since I'm a SAHM for now, but I feel bad for my husband because he can't get any sleep before he has to wake up for work. We sleep trained around 6 months and it went well for a couple of months, then lately it's been like we're going backwards.
I wasn't sure what else to do so today I decided to take out the swing to try it for a nap and it worked like a charm. He fell asleep within minutes then I transferred him to his crib.  Is this a bad idea? Am I creating a bad habit all over again? Please help, I'm just confused!!

Thanks.

  • Check the weight limit on the swing. Also, I think it is a bad idea. You are just creating one more sleep association you'll have to break later.

  • Um...we never put ours away. We're nowhere near the weight limit for ours, and we only use it for a nap here and there now. But if LO is sick, or having a really rough day, it works like a charm. I worried so much that he'd be addicted to it, but I haven't found that to be the case. He regularly takes hour+ naps in his crib, but there are just some days that are rough so I like being able to use it for now.

  • I wouldn't use the swing as my go-to. Every once in a while is probably ok. Have you considered wake to sleep for the night waking?
  • We went had thus problem a couple weeks ago when DD had croup. I didn't want to get out the swing since it was the only place she would sleep for the first 9 months of her life .... But she could breathe and was miserable. So she slept in it for a week. The next week she woke up every hour in her crib. Then for 3 nights she slept all night. Now she's back to waking once but for only 10 minutes. We put the swing back away. She's 11 months and waaaaay under the weight limit for the swing.

  • you do what you must to survive. DD was strictly in the swing until 7 months when I finally broke down and got a RnP. At 8.5 months we finally got her into her crib on our 4th try...
