Tell me about your roomba/steam mop

If you have a roomba or steam mop or some other device for your wood floors, tell me about it.
Right now I am having a terrible time keeping my floors clean. I feel like I spend all my free time sweeping and mopping. It's so frustrating. There's got to be a better way...

  • We have a Roomba. As valuable as it is for the day-to-day pet hair and dirt/leaves the dogs bring in, it is even more valuable as a toy for K.

We turn ours on every 2 days or so and run it on our hardwoods. It fills up pretty fast, but if you use it regularly it is really good for keeping the house clean in between vacuums. It is not something that could replace vacuuming, but rather make vacuuming less frequent. Honestly, I love ours and would recommend it 100%. it is also really good about getting into those very hard to reach places under furniture and under the couch that a vacuum really can't.

  • We have one wood floor and tile throughout except the bedrooms.  I have a Roomba that will be one of the things I'll grab if my house is ever on fire.  I love it.  Having a dog (formerly 2) that shed, it is a lifesaver.  I have the one that allows you to set a schedule, so it comes on while we're gone each day.  It's much better than the lower priced model that I had before.

As for my Shark steam mop, it can bite me.  It streaks up my wood floor.  I have a crapton of tile and I can't do the whole thing or it would take me forever.  I end up mopping regularly, then using the steam mop to spot clean or do high traffic areas.

  • @StokedWifey: I was just looking at the Roomba website. Do you know which model you have? There are so many options out there, and they are pricey!  $-)
We have the 650.  We got the 530 (they don't make it anymore) as a wedding gift, but it malfunctioned.  I took it back to Bed Bath & Beyond and used a 20% coupon.  It's $399 there too, I think, but the 20% helps some.

  • Maybe Santa will bring me a Roomba...

In the meantime, I will have to check out the shark mop thingy.

I currently sweep and spot clean (that's on hands and knees with a spray bottle of Mr. Clean and a rag) once (sometimes twice) a day and do a full-on mopping twice a week.

I was using a Swiffer but it does nothing. It seems to just smear things around and leaves a dull, funky residue that leaves foot prints when you walk across it.

If we weren't renters, I would carpet everything but the dining room and kitchen. I can handle twice weekly vacuuming and a monthly carpet cleaning.

  • I vacuum and mop once every 2 weeks unless there is an unusual circumstance (ie, the dog tracking in mud). And MH is OCD so my house is pretty spotless most of the time. The Roomba makes it easy to go 2 weeks in between. Oh, and we have almost entirely hardwood downstairs and all carpet upstairs but the dogs don't rarely go upstairs.
