Echogenic bowel in our U/S

We had our big 20 week ultrasound yesterday and the doctor seen echogenic (bright white) bowel and also a echogenic spot in our little girls heart. He said the spot in the heart is fairly common and usually goes away but with the combination of the two things he mentioned the possiblity of it indicating cystic fibrosis, Down's, or CMV Infection. :/ Not what we were expecting to hear at all! It is a small chance that our LO could have these but still can make you nervous.
Anyone else had experience with this?
We have a follow up ultrasound in 8 weeks to see of the whiteness goes away. I just seriously have never heard of this...

Re: Echogenic bowel in our U/S

  • Did you see your OB after the testing or the Ultrasound doctor?  I'd likely want to talk to my own OB about testing options.  But that's me - for you and your partner - do you want to know if there is a problem?  For me, it wouldn't impact my decision to continue the pregnancy, but it might for you.  For me, it would impact where I deliver - I would want to be at a research university with an excellent NICU program, and I would also want to be ready emotionally.

Finding out your CF carrier status is generally offered to newly pregnant moms (where I live, anyway) - its a simple blood test.  Since you and your partner both need to carry the gene, you should be able to find out easily if there's any possibility of your baby having CF.  More info here:  https://www.cff.org/AboutCF/Testing/Genetics/GeneticCarrierTest/

I've not heard of Down Syndrome being associated with echogenic bowel but echogenic heart is a soft marker.  Did you have a NT scan or other screening?  I would ask my OB about the possibility of doing CFDNA (MaterniT 21, Verifi, Harmony are brand names) if you want to know with more certainty.  You also could do amnio with fairly low risk this late in your pregnancy.

CMV infection is another one they should be able to test your blood for, since you would have the antibodies for it to even be a possibility for your fetus.  More info:  https://www.mayoclinic.com/health/cmv/DS00938/DSECTION=tests-and-diagnosis

Good luck with whatever you decide, I hope it turns out to be nothing.  FWIW - I do know that cardiac echogenic focus is very  common.  I and a lot of other women here had them on our A/S.

I was told baby had an echogenic bowel as we'll, although nothing about the heart. I went to a perinatologist and had another ultrasound which was ok although they are still following me in case. It was scary, but could be nothing so try not to worry too much just yet. Easier said than done I know...

  • I dont have experience with the others, but DS had the white spot on his heart, and everything turned out just fine. It was a lot of worry before the follow-up ultrasound. But prayers that all is well!
