When to worry about head shape?

Our LO has a wonky shaped head. It is something that concerns me but the Ped said it was fine at our 2 week appt. LO is now 5 weeks and still has a misshapen head. It kind of cones to the back and slightly to one side. He was a c section baby but only after 17 hours of labor. So he was engaged but at an odd angle. We don't have another appt until 2 months so I thought I would ask you ladies if you have any experience with this. We do try to position him in diff ways to help but it doesn't seem to make much difference. Anyone out there with experience?

  • DS's head is a little wonky too. I'm not going to worry about it until he's about 6 months old. As they get older they'll be holding their heads up more and the wonkiness should sort itself out. If he's still wonky by 6 months I'll consult our pediatrician.

My lo has a wonky shaped head too - -- kind of cone like and maybe flat too (she's 7 weeks). I'm going to ask about it at her 2 month appt but I've heard most pedis won't worry too much until after 6 months. My hubs says he's not too worried and I agree, she'll be sitting up and not lying on it so much soon.

  • So does my DS...pedi kinda blew it off; chalked it up to his hair?! But it really concerns me...one side of his head bulges on the side and it has been that way since birth. I see it in all his pictures. Just one more thing to worry about I guess. Hoping it sorts itself out...just wondering how long it'll take. :-/

  • The woman who ran my infant massage class (she's a nicu nurse) said that if the baby is favoring one side to turn its head you should make sure to encourage your LO to turn the other way as well so they don't end up with a flat side of the head.

But if it's misshapen other than being flat I would ask the pediatrician.

  • We did the chiro therapy with our second one b/c she favored one side and had issues latching, They showed me her head was lopsided which I never noticed, but as PP said, it was very gentle and completely corrected LOs latch & head shape. I planned on doing it with DD#3 regardless of issues b/c it's we found it so beneficial!

    DD #2 2 years old (08/17/11)
