Working mommas

Since Tess started daycare 5 months ago she has caught a cold at least 4 times. She eats healthy and the daycare and our house is cleaned throughly. Anyone else having this issue? Any suggestions?

Also she is the size of an average 2 year old... Any concerns about starting her on a childrens multi-vitamin at 16 months?

Thanks ladies!

Re: Working mommas

  • When Owen was in daycare he was sick almost 24/7. Colds, stomach bugs, pink eye, sinus infections, everything. After 6 months I couldn't take his illnesses, my and Hs subsequent illness, doctor co pays, and prescription fees anymore and I pulled him out to have my mom watch him, which I know is a luxury that is not often an option for people. I have heard that it gets better over time though if you stick with it.

As far as vitamins, Owen's been getting a poly-vi-sol with iron since 12 months.

  • It's typical for them to get sick from being around other kids, no matter how clean the place is kids are really little petri-dishes. The good thing is this will be building her immune system so she'll get sick less later on. Charlie has gotten sick many times at daycare too so I know what you're talking about. And regarding vitamins, our doc said we could start giving her half a flinstones vitamin if we wanted to now since they melt better than the gummy ones. I would talk with your pedi about this though.

  • Lol. So investing in a giant plastic gerbil ball so she can run around is not the answer, huh? Thanks everyone for the insight and I will be sure to ask her dr about the vitamins!

  • No advice about daycare but I SAH and my kid still gets colds, she's just getting over a bad one. Babies have no immunity so it's completely normal for them to get sick because they need to build up immunity to those cold strands.

My dr recommended the gummy multivitamin at her 15 month appointment. They are for 2+ but I just give her 1 instead of the recommended 2

  • We had that problem when he first started.  It's a little better now but he still gets everything and so do we!  Good times.

  • I think a cold 4 times in almost a year is pretty normal for daycare kids.  My LO started at the dayhome at 12 months and it seems like she's had a runny nose every since.  She only had one sickness that was hard on her though - she had a fever a few weeks after starting.  All the people I know that are teachers say that the kids who went to daycare never get sick in kindergarden because they have strong immunity and the kids that had a stay at home mom or a nanny are more prone to getting colds.  I don't know if there are actual studies on that - I've just heard it from teachers and it makes sense.  So the frequent colds may become less frequent over time.  :)

For the weight, I don't have any advice.  Some kids are just naturally bigger and some are smaller.  Keep feeding him healthy and make sure he gets lots of physical activity.  Good food and activity can help strengthen the immune system and prevent colds too! If you are worried about the weight and colds, talk to your doc about it.

  • Kellen started in August and has had a cold ever since about 2 weeks in (so for like 2 months now). I hear the first several months are the worst, and then their immune system kind of catches on.

  • Kiera is not in daycare; her grandparents alternate watching her and when we go to the store I use one of those cart covers. She still got a shitton of colds last year.
