Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Reccomend your baby carrier - Beco or Ergo?

I posted this on another board but re-posting here to get some additional feeback.
I am going back and forth between the Beco Gemini and Ergo.  I haven't tried the Beco, but I tried the Ergo (front carry) with my 5 month old LO and it seemed comfortable for the short time I wore her.  The Ergo doesn't accommodate the baby facing out, where the Beco does.  Anyone have any experience with the Beco?  How long were you able to face your baby out (age in months/weigh/height)?  Looking for any recommendations/feedback on these two carriers.

Thanks in advance!!

Re: Reccomend your baby carrier - Beco or Ergo?

  • Ergo can do a back carry, becco can't, so the ergo is going to last longer

  • Beco allows for a back carry, just as the Ergo does.  Where did you see/hear that Beco does not have a back carry?

    Sorry, I thought it didn't
  • Have an Ergo and LOVE it. It does get a little warm though, so not great for hot weather. LO will not tolerate me sitting either, not sure if that is typical.
  • I love my Becco! So easy to use and the baby doesn't need the insert when they are a newborn. I highly highly recommend and can not say enough good things about it! Now that he is older I wear him out and he loves it.I have never wore him on my back so I can not speak to that but I know that you can. I would watch the you tube videos and the videos on the becco website. This is the one I have. I know they now back a newer model.

  • I should also mention that I had a c section and was able to start wearing him comfortably at around 3 or 4 weeks old.

  • Loved the Ergo with DD1. Just got a Beco Gemini for DD2 bc she threw a fit the last 5-6 times I tried to put her in it.  She likes it either facing out or in.  It is comfortable and seems to be lighter/less there than the Ergo.  I like how the cover can extend up to give more head support and then can be snapped down if they want to look around more or be facing out.  I do miss the pouch thing my Ergo had on the front though.  I carried my keys, phone and DD's paci in there all the time.  I also miss the hood on the Ergo that snapped over their head.  It was nice for when it was windy/rainy/cold, or to keep the sun off the top of their head.  But I can always use a hat on them.

  • I have the ergo, and LO hates it. I'm very seriously considering getting something else.

FWIW, wearing a baby facing out can cause hip dysplasia. The ideal position for a baby's legs in a carrier is a froggy position which is achieved with baby facing in. If they face out, their legs just hang there.

From what I hear some babies like some carriers and hate others. LO has always hated facing in and would never tolerate it so she loves the Beco. I've been wearing her facing out since about 10 weeks but don't know poundage/height.

It's not the ideal position but she is probably in it only a couple hours a week when we go out.

  • I have a beco. I forget exactly which one mine is, but you can do front carry (forward and backward facing), back carry and side/hip carry. I looked at the ergo, but ultimately went with the Beco because you could wear a newborn without needing any extra inserts. Otherwise, I think they're pretty similar.

  • I have the Becco Gemini and I really like it. It does get hot though.  DD2 is 4mo and can only stand to be in it when she is tired and falls right to sleep.  I just don't think she likes being restricted because I also tried out a rs and she wouldn't have that at all.

  • I have the becco Gemini, LO is 4.5mo and 15lbs. I use it for when we walk our dog, so around 20-30 mins and it is fine. I proper to put a hand around LO for support, not needed, just what I prefer to do.

  • I chose Becco because it is made in America. I love Becco because it distributes weight so well, I forget how heavy my baby weighs. I have used it two of the four ways. Comfortable and durable.
  • I have the Becco Soleil and LOVE it! It doesn't allow the forward face but I figure ill start carrying her on my back when she gets big enough to use it. I love that all the Becco's allow to cross the straps . I tried the ergo about a year ago with my son and hated how the straps fell a crossed my shoulders it never felt safe. I love that I can carry my cell phone in the little pocket and that when needed I can attach the optional carry all bag with enough space for a few diapers, wipes , a change of clothes and a receiving blanket . The carrier is super comfy I'm extremely happy .
  • It is not really recommended to wear your baby facing out so that would not factor into the decision for me. I have an ergo and a boba and love oth of them. I have found the ergo slightly more comfortable and I think my daughter prefers the ergo a bit more as well.
  • We just got an Ergo and are very pleased with it so far. And someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I am pretty sure those front facing carriers are bad for babies (their hips, maybe?), so I wouldn't buy that other one.
  • I have not tried the Becco nor have I heard of it until not but I used the Moby and it was way too hot and a pain to tie on. I tried the Ergo and it was nice until around 3 months when legs were longer. I didn't like how Ergo seat is so wide for legs to spread. tried the Bjorn and really like it and so does baby. His legs hang freely and he can look out instead of staring at my chest.
  • Love my Ergo! I live in really hot climate(116 in the summer) and I was just fine wearing it, you're going to get hot if you're snuggled up to a little baby! I didn't get the newborn insert. Instead I swaddled DD and put her sideways so her legs were out one side. I had my opposite arm supporting her so there was no way she could slip or anything. It saved quite a bit of money not having to buy the insert. DD loves her Ergo! If I don't want to use the stroller we'll go for a walk with just that and she conks right out. I also used it when she was only a couple weeks old and wouldn't fall asleep, I'd put her in that and rock around and she was sound asleep in a few minutes

I have also heard that it is not a good idea to wear baby facing out. Something to do with their neck.... Although I have done it in a bjorn a few times but only for very very short periods of time.

I love my Ergo. Is there a place you can try some on? Or borrow from a friend?

Legs spread wide with knees above or at least even with the hips is the correct position for baby to be in when they are being worn. Legs dangling down (like in a bjorn) is not ergonomically correct and cause issues with hip and pelvic development. https://www.hipdysplasia.org/developmental-dysplasia-of-the-hip/prevention/baby-carriers-seats-and-other-equipment/

A lot of people seem to like the ergo, I considered getting one, but ended up with the Beco Gemini. I absolutely love it, you can have the baby face you, face out, sit on your hip or on your back. I find it to be so much more comfortable to carry in than the bjorn was. You can also adjust the width of the part that goes between their legs with the Beco, I don't know if you can do that with the Ergo.

You can't do that with the ergo.
  • I hated the Ergo, and I love my Beco Gemini. It seems to be a better quality carrier. I also love that you can adjust the width of the seat. You can carry in several different ways. Because of the way the "seat" is designed, it is not a crotch dangler . You can forward carry, but it's not recommended for longer periods of time. It is much more comfortable than the Ergo, in my opinion.
