Cervical check ain't no thang.

I was worried about the cervical check hurting based on some of the posts here, and while I know everyone is different, for me it was no biggie. I asked why they do it since the dialating means basically nothing. She said it will help us know how long someone should wait until they head to the hospital especially STMs+.

She didn't use stirrups, and had me put my fists under my hips to tilt my pelvis up. So just FYI for other FTMs who are nervous.

Re: Cervical check ain't no thang.

  • I was checked this week and it didn't hurt at all yes a little pressure but wouldn't rather the pressure/slight uncomfort then not knowing what's going on. I'm glad they checked as I'm showing signs of progress!!

  • They don't hurt for me either, they are uncomfortable, but no big deal.

  • Mine didn't hurt either. The doctor told it would feel like he was reaching for my tonsils, but not painful at all.
  • Mine never hurt either..just pressure. I just think everyone's different. Never had bleeding or cramps afterwards either.
  • How comfortable vs uncomfortable it is usually depends on the position of your cervix.  Those with a more posterior cervix tend to have more uncomfortable exams than those with an anterior cervix.  That being said, I didn't find it to be too bad.  Just uncomfortable.

  • Mine was a piece of cake as well. It was over in about 2 seconds. As I suspected I was closed, thick and high:) I know that can change any minute, but as I am NOT quite ready for baby girl to make her appearence it was reassuring none the less.

  • Mine bloody hurt! I think it was more due to the pelvic pain than the exam hurting.

  • Last pregnancy I remember them hurting a lot!      I got the group b strep test last week and that was super painful this time.   I have my 37 week appt tomorrow and was thinking of forgoing the check because I know it will be painful, but last night I was having some crazy contractions, so now I'm curious if I'm dilated at all.   I'll suffer through the pain I guess.

I have a friend pregnant with her first and I mentioned the checks and how they might hurt, but she said that they have not bothered her at all.   So I guess everyone is different

  • That's good that yours didn't hurt :) Honestly the only reason, I believe, it was hurting me last time was because when I was checked I was contracting and everything was tense and tight so it was just more sensitive.

  • I just had one done and it actually did hurt, but the pain went away shortly after she got out of there.  Mine hurt mostly because baby girl's so low her head actually has to be moved out of the way to get to my cervix.  That probably coupled with the fact that I'm actually in pre-labor (4cm dilated) makes it quite uncomfortable.

It's definitely nice to know that I'm progressing and almost halfway there so shouldn't wait too incredibly long once I feel like active labor has started.

  • Mine have been hurting because baby has not dropped AT ALL.

They didn't hurt like this last time.

It takes two seconds though so nothing to worry yourself about!
  • I agree, mine this week did not hurt either, despite me preparing for the worst.  It was definitely uncomfortable, but fortunately didn't last too long!
  • Mine hurt like a bitch. Good for you!

  • Mine didn't hurt even if it felt like she was feeling my tonsils!

  • Mine hurt like a bitch, too!
  • Mine never hurt when my MWs did it but I did have CNM student do one and that was a little more uncomfortable but not bad.
  • This is my third pregnancy, and in my experience it makes a HUGE difference depending on who is doing it--some OBs are just way better at it than others!

  • I've had 3 cervix checks and I wouldn't say they were painful either. Just a lot of pressure and discomfort. I did get some period like cramps for the rest of the day but I never had any bleeding from any of the checks.
  • Mine were pain free but resulted in light cramping the next day. Never spotted. Baby is head down and super low so doctor didn't have to reach far. I'm sure that helped.

I think the rule of thumb here is "experiences may vary" but going in to it I had only ever heard they hurt like a bitch, so I was nervous about it too.

  • I've had one and it wasn't bad, strep b was more uncomfortable, but  just because this one didn't, I'm not fooling myself into thinking none of them will!  And I'm just too much of a planner/control freak to bypass them, I want to know!  I'll take the pain.

  • I had my first one yesterday at 38 weeks. She told me it would be uncomfortable and I said "I heard." But it ended up being completely fine :) I went to the grocery store after though and had to pee and got surprised by a period amount of blood in my pad. It tapered off though!
  • Ugh, I'm glad a lot of you haven't been uncomfortable! Mine have been no fun, but she also said I'm posterior, which I think probably has a lot to do with it. Ack.

I'll just enjoy the fact that evidently, here in backwoods India, there's no need for 'em (even by my western-trained folks) until, well, I decide I want them.

Totally not complaining that I don't have to effectively get fisted for medical care. ;)

Yep this. And I'm in not-so-backwoods NJ. Glad my midwife doesn't want them because i don't want it!

  • I had one yesterday. It was definitely uncomfortable and maybe it could be described as slightly painful but it was over so quick regardless. No cramping or bleeding. But still in all not looking forward to the rest of them. I'm 36w
  • After being checked about 6-7 times between Thursday morning and Friday afternoon, by 4 different people (MW, 2 L&D nurses and an OB) I can definitely say that it really depends on who is doing the check.  The checks by my MW seemed to be the most uncomfortable, but she's also quite small and I think that her smaller hands made it harder to get around baby's head without hurting me and having to really dig.  I also have a posterior cervix, but when the morning l&d nurse and the OB checked me, it was more uncomfortable than painful.  They didn't have to dig around at all and I think it's because they have a longer finger reach.

  • Oh god I feel like I'm gonna be sick thinking about it. Is it okay to decline this? When the did the strep b test that was super uncomfortable and that was just a tiny qtip! I haven't had sex in months and the thought of two fingers fishing around makes me scared
  • How many weeks do that usually start doing this. ?
  • My doc said no cervical checks until my appointment at 38 weeks
