Nikon photographers come in.

It's time. My D40 is retiring itself after 8 long years of good use.

What's a good upgrade to it without going most expensive top of the line?

I'm a hobbyist photographer who uses most manual settings but hubby needs to be able to use it in simple auto mode.

  • I am no help because I have a different brand, all I want to say is cameras with multiple options is like trying to figure out coding for a computer. I can't even....

  • I just retired my D40 earlier this month and upgraded to a D5100. I like it so far and the quality is definitely better. I haven't used it enough to really comment on all the bells & whistles, but I would look into it if you're looking for an upgrade.

It's actually not that hard. I read a "for dummies" book years ago and got the basic down and then just played here and there on my own to learn the rest.

I've been reading on the 5100 and 5200. I just wondered if someone knows a good model a year or two older (and still for sale). I figure if I've been happy with the 40 this long I can buy a few model back and not care and save some moola

  • I've got the D90 and I really like it. It is easy to switch to auto mode for DH. I also like the video feature for capturing family moments.

We actually got ours new in the box off of Craigslist for well below retail. Worth a look!
