Orange peel

So we've been BLW since E was 6 months and she's always been great with it. Except for citrus fruits. She insists on eating the peel. Like at a restaurant, we will give her the lemon wedge or the orange slice garnish. And she loves to eat the peel. Is this safe? My biggest concern I think is pesticides and junk on the outside of the peel. Bi she cries for our lemons and insists on eating the peel. WWYD?

Re: Orange peel

  • I think my concerns would be the same as yours. But people use lemon and orange zest in things so I think it must be ok, at least in small quantities. Can you cut the very outside of the peel off before giving it to her?

  • Not always, this is particularly an issue at the Japanese restaurant we go to, an they don't have knives. Just chopsticks. I try to wash the peel off some with my water and a napkin. I don't know if it does any good or not.

  • I once read something about the super gross things that are on peels at restaurants. It was enough to stop me from putting lemon wedges in my water. So, I wouldn't be so worried about the peels at home where you can give them a good rinse. I'd actually be pretty worried about what is on them at restaurants. I also won't put ice in my water at soda fountains...that story is REALLY gross!

  • I've heard of the restaurant lemon wedges one, but not the ice. An I don't want to know. I have enough germaphobe issues. What I don't know can't terrify me. But can it really be any worse than the rocks she put in her mouth at the park yesterday?

  • Don't worry- I won't tell you. I wish I didn't know! And, that's how I feel about food off the floor. If it's not a choking hazard, they'll be just fine.

  • If she isn't choking on it, I don't really see the harm. If you do a quick Google search, the peels are actually healthy for you and even contain anti-cancer properties. E just loves her healthy foods :)

All of this. My gma used to eat peels for their healthy properties. Id just wash them off the best you can. :)

  • Honestly, I used to be super worried about everything that went into DS's mouth when h was a baby. After the first time I watched him shove a handful of sand from the playground into his mouth I realized that there were way worse things he was probably eating. If use restaurant peels really gross you out, you can bring your own lemon to the restaurant and let her have that.
