Baby standing in crib and refusing to sleep - suggestions

My baby has been standing for a while now, but recently figured out that he can also do so in his crib. It used to be fairly simple to put him to sleep (I would just lay him down and he would put himself to sleep), but now every time I put him down he stands up and just cries or hangs out. I don't know what to do to get him back to sleeping? It took me over an hour yesterday to get him to go to sleep for good. He kept standing and I kept going into the room to put him down. Finally I just stayed with him holding him down until he fell sleep. This is the same for naps, yesterday I pretty much gave up and let him nap in my bed with me so he could get a good nap, but I don't/can't do this every time as I have to stay with him in bed as I don't want him to fall if he wakes up (he's a fast crawler). Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

  • I would try just letting him stand up until he tires of it and goes down. I bet it doesn't last too long if you just let him work it out? Of course, my LO isn't doing that yet so that that FWIW.

  • this happened to us as well! during the day, we practiced having him sit from a standing position. there were two rough nights of him standing in the crib, but after a few days he was getting down on his own and going to sleep.
  • Thank you ladies!! He does know how to go from standing to seating. We have been practicing while we play and he does it no problem!! I will definitely let him stand and see if he gets the point that I will not be coming in. Should I do the same for naps?
  • We had that issue too. At first i would lay her back down but then wait longer and longer before going in again to lay her down. This phase lasted about two week. Now she doesn't stand up at all when its nap time. GL!

  • Mine just started today.  I let him stand there until he gets tired.  He doesn't know how to get down.  He basically falls over.  He will learn.
  • Dd went through this. We just had to wait it out. Until she learned how to sit back down I had to get ger to fall asleep then put her in her crib.

  • Thank you ladies...so I have been letting him stand and not putting him down, however, he refuses to sit on his own. I know he can do it because while we play, he will stand on his own and sit back down in order to transition to a different toy, but he won't do this in his crib and will just cry and cry until I come in to lay him back down. It breaks my heart to hear him cry and I don't know if this is what I should do to let him get the point that he needs to lay down. Any suggestions?
  • my daughter does this all of the time. we can talk through the video monitor. i just tell her to go to sleep. she is usually out in 5-10 minutes. going back in there usually makes it worse for us. in the beginning she would fuss longer, but now she knows and is able to soothe herself. If she cries longer than the 5-10 minutes, I go in and check on her. Sometimes she might be wet or hungry or her dad might have put her pjs on crooked (oops!)...
