Pregnant after a Loss

Cost of Progesterone Suppositories

WTF.

$600??????

We have really good insurance and it's not covered.  We do not have $600 laying around.  Luckily my parents are awesome and lent us the money, but goddamn that's a lot of money!

If you have to take progesterone suppositories does your insurance cover it?

Re: Cost of Progesterone Suppositories

  • Sorry about the cost. What was your progesterone level? Is there any way you could do oral instead of supps? My insurance covered oral. It was about $60 for 12 week supply.

  • I have the generic form and pay 20. Sorry! When I first went on them 3 yrs ago. My dr did mention they were expensive because all they had was name brand prometrium, but insurance did cover them... Now when I went to fill the prescript the gave me a generic. So maybe see if you are taking the generic form.

Holy smokes!!!! I only do 50mg once a day so qty 30 without insurance is $49

I have BCBS FED and I think it would technically be covered but a long paperwork process so I said scew it and paid. You might want to call your insurance it may just require authorization sent from your doc
  • I'm taking Crinone 8% and the pharmacist said there is not a generic form of it?  My progesterone was 16 at four-ish weeks and at 7 weeks (a week ago) it was 7.4.  I have had no bleeding at all and the baby is measuring two days ahead with a strong heartbeat....

I don't know what to think.

  • Hoooooly crap. I have heard that Crinone is really expensive. I am on the oral prometrium and it costs me $200 for a month supply which I think is way too much.

Crinone is very expensive and a tier 2 drug. Every insurance is different but sometimes if the doc sends authorization to the insurance that you need it for pregnancy, it may cover more of it. Otherwise, insurance considers it a fertility medication and some insurance companies don't cover fertility meds or treatment. There is also endometrium (but I personally didn't absorb it and miscarried) and a compound that can be made by a pharmacy. I just paid $45 for a month supply of that. There are pills but they are not as strong being that you don't apply right to the source. There is also an oil (I found with my insurance to be the cheapest) but involves giving yourself shots :( good luck to you! You should only need it until 10-12 weeks and then the placenta takes over. I'm back on progesterone now to prevent contractions and preterm labor.

  • My insurance wouldn't cover any progesterone. It ended up taking a few days before I could get the prescription filled. I ended up with plain progesterone suppositories, made specially at the hospital pharmacy. They were not that expensive maybe around $30.

  •  My insurance kind of covered the Crinone-$131 for a 15 day supply!!! So my midwife switched the scrip to suppositories for the refill. Should be $100 for 30 days. My insurance required my midwife to call and get preapproval for both-I guess they are considered fertility drugs. OP can your doc try that maybe and you file for reimbursement? I mean, without the preaproval that crinone would have been over $500 for me...
  • OMG, really?! I get my supps compounded, and even then it's only $20 for a 2 week supply. I think you should call your insurance and see what's going on!

This is what I had to do as well. Otherwise, my 10 week supply if suppositories would have been I think 700 to 800 dollars. I calculated the cost per suppository at just about 50 dollars. It's not right. ((Hugs))

  • Wow that is ridiculous!  I take oral supplements and since DH works for  generic drug company, we don't pay anything for them.  Huge hugs to you!

  • I am currently taking the crinone 8% and my BCBS does not cover it either...out of pocket was 400.00 crazy I know. I think it depends on where you go for the prescription. Because I went somewhere else and only paid 200.00
