New cat peed in my playpen!

So Dh decided to adopt the outside cat that has been hanging around our house for awhile now. We took her to the vet to get shots and declawed because the cat we have now is declawed and in order to come in she had to be to, cost us about $400 . Well im sitting on the couch and kept smelling something weird, Im asking dh do u smell that, he keeps saying no no no. I get up and start investigating and of course she peed in the playpen on the mattress that can not be thrown in the wash arggh! We washed it in the tub and have it hanging in there to dry, im hoping the smell comes out and that it does not happen again. I was afraid of this happening, she used the litter box last night, i saw her go in there to do her business, so I dont get it. One angry mama here, especially at dh, I am not an animal lover and I let him take this cat in, hope it doesnt keep biting me in the butt!

  • She's probably just marking her territory as cats do. You can get stuff to put inside the litter to help make them go there. Also, you'll need to clean the litter pan more often. We found with our cats we have to clean twice a day to keep the litter clean or they'll pee on things (like my suitcase, grrr!). I'd also get some Bac Out and spray that mattress so that she won't pee in there again.

  • Yea I think she is just marking her territory because dh is anal about cleaning the litter box. I'll have to go to the pet store to get the spray in the am.

  • I get Bac Out at my regular grocery store (Safeway) or at Super Supplements. I suggest it over other enzyme cleaners since everything is plant based and safe for pets/babies. I use it for almost everything stain related with the pets and kids. It's great stuff!

  • I don't have a cat anymore, but I used to use a spray call "zero "odor". I tried everything, and this was the best one I ever found. I think you can get it at bed, bath and beyond or on amazon. Another good one was Dumb Cat. I miss my kitty, but I do not miss his occasional marking episodes. Good luck!
  • I think the declawing process is pretty traumatic. So maybe it's not a permanent thing just an adjustment to being declawed or transiting to the house.

My cats use the litter box but they destroyed our carpet and are destroying our area rugs with their scratching so I feel your cat frustrations.

  • We had a chair that our male cat used to pee on, and honestly, no matter what you do, the smell is probably going to remain to some degree. The closest I ever got was to take the couch cushion, put it in the bathtub with some Tide, and let it soak a day or two and then rinse it off...
