Target- Heads up if you don't know the return policy.

I am so pissed off right now I don't even know where to start.
Background-I relieved two moby wraps for my baby shower. We are keeping one and (I thought) returning the other. We do not have a target around us, closest one is 45 mins away, so I never shop there and I have no idea how their return policy works. I called this morning before I went to see if they could take a return without a receipt and a bar code because we threw the packaging away on accident :( I know, stupid me. Anyways, she said yes as long as they have one in stock and I have my drivers license on me then we can return it and get store credit, no problem. I ask if they have one in stock and for her to go check because I was 45 mins away and I would be really annoyed if I drove there for nothing. I tell her that there are multiple things that need to be returned but we have a receipt for all of them and ask if I need to bring anything else. She says nope, puts me on hold, comes back and says they have the moby in stock, so off I waddle to make a trip to target!
Well as I get to the counter and hand the lady all of the items (there were multiple and the moby cost $50. All together the items added up to over $100) she asks me where the bar code is and I explain the issue. She rolls her eyes, speaks to me with a rude tone and was of no help what so ever. She walkies back to an associate to check and see if they have one in stock that they can bring up and he said NO!
WHAT THE HELL!? I just called and asked about an hour ago to avoid this whole issue and it still happens. So I returned all of my other stuff and asked where I could return the moby because we were planning on using that money from the gift card to get a crib mattress, which is out LAST thing to buy. She tells me that the closest store is 30 mins away and I would have to go over there to get it. I sighed and gave her the look of death and she finally says that she will call over there to see if they actually have it in stock. They do, so off to another store, in the opposite direction of my house I might add, to return this damn moby.

I show up at the other store and explain the situation again. The lady makes me waddle back to get the moby and bring it back up, she scans it and then scans my ID and tells me that there is a $70 limit to what you can return in a year! Basically I have to wait until January to return it. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?! Why was I not told this at the first store when I made all of those returns? Why did they not tell me that when I called the first time?

I never got to return the moby. I walked out of there with a soda and Reeces and I will never shop there again. I got the name of the lady that helped me and since she was super rude and failed to give me the right information, corporate will be getting a phone call.

Anyone else have a store that they are fed up with and will never shop there again?

What the heck!! BRU has been great with my returns so far but target was definitely a pain in the ass!! You can always try selling it online or to a friend for cash then you won't need to worry about the store credit

Edited:: also, I'd like to add, (at least for babies r us) if you received items that you know we're purchased there and don't want to stress over saving and organizing the receipts, you can just add them to your registry and mark that they have already been received. Your registry will hold up as the receipt, and you can return them whenever. I don't know if they will still accept items without the packaging, but it might be worth the phone call? If they will, just add the wrap and mark it relieved and return it there.

  • We had the same issue with a bouncy seat we tried to take back to Wal-Mart. We went to 6 different stores before we finally found one to return it to! So annoying!!
  • I love shopping at target but regret registering there. From the beginning it was a disaster. Sorry about your luck!!
  • Just a heads up on target... They do suck, as you discovered, but a potential for you - did you register for the moby? If so, there might be hope for you... in store (if you are willing to trek back there?!) on their registry computers, you can select something like "purchase history", or something like that, and if someone bought it off your reg for you, but you have no gift receipt you *might* be in luck. Not sure if it works in your case with no packaging, but I was able to do that for couple of items on mine. I used to love Target, but this registry with them has been one awful thing after another. I'm sorry for you. Sounds so frustrating!

Wow that sucks, the targets by me are great. Did you have a baby registry with them? If that's the case then the $100 per year limit doesn't apply. You go to the kiosk and print you "gift registry log" and then you can return a ton. I've returned over $350 of gifts that had no reciepts. Totally sucked you had to waddle your ass all over the place. Thumbs down target.

Also, it must depend in the market or the particular store because BRU here has been a nightmare. I have no desire to ever go there again and was so happy when I used my last gift card. Returning there was a total hassle and I got almost no money for the items.

  • Where else do they sell moby? I have found that babies r us, buy buy baby and target will all take anything back without a receipt as long as they sell the item. You could also try making a small registry online at target.com and adding the moby to that list and then returning it for store credit because it would be on your registry and the $70
    Per year rule wouldn't matter.
  • My Target has been more than helpful with all of my returns... I'm sorry about your luck. :(

You can definitely sell your Moby to someone else though.

I tried that. It was called a gift purchase log and the lady didn't even know what I was talking about when I mentioned it.
@kamakaziartist I was afraid that I would not be able to return it, so that was why I called. I was surprised that they let me return it, but we got it in the mail, so, for some reason the moby did not come in a box...it came in a bag?. So I was worried about that, but they said I could return it even without the box.
  • Only thing about their limit of how much you can return with your ID is its not calendar year it's a year from when you first start your returns... So in your case it will a year from today!

If this is the case the have your SO or a friend return it for you:)

If you received two why did you take them both out their packaging and throw all the packaging away??

I have a registry at Target and have made several trips for returns, no problems.

I opened one an my SO opened the other without realizing it :(
  • That sucks.  You should bump more.  I think the Target return policy has been mentioned numerous times btw.

You could always have your SO(or someone else) do the return for you.
  • Target is great for returning anything you buy on your own credit card because they can look it up without a receipt but anything that is a gift without a gift receipt sucks. I did not gave a registry there but had someone give me like 10 newborn outfits from there when my son was like 3 months old and they said they would only take back 2 so I ended up just giving away the rest.
  • Yes! I'm glad you posted, because I recently had a similar experience with Target.  I received a Diaper Genie, then decided I didn't want to pay extra for the bags.  When I received the gift the person who gave it to me also handed me the gift receipt.  Easy right? No!

When, I went to Target they said they did not carry that item in their store.  And, that I would have to drive to a Super Target in order to get the full refund.  How the hell am I supposed to know this?  They then said the best they could do is give me a gift car for $2.40.  WTF?  I can't remember their reasoning for this because I just saw red.

Finally, they punched in something in the computer and gave me a gift card for the full value of the diaper pail.   Though, I was happy I received something, I  thought the "run-around" was ridiculous and expect so much more from Target.

  • Pea In the Pod gets my return policy rant. I bought a pair of pants online, never wore them or unwrapped them. They are shrink wrapped with a tag and barcode on them. I took them in to the store to exchange for some nursing tanks/bras. The lady says she can't take an online return without the receipt because her computer system doesn't read the barcode from the online sales. What effing genius designed that system??

Then she said, yeah, we sell these (pointed to them, 15 feet away) and they are on sale now. I said, well that's fine, I don't mind a reduced store credit since they are on sale now. She was like, no, I can't take them.

    WTF?

  • I will admit, I am totally guilty of adding things to my Target registry just to return it shortly after for store credit. They accept my return every single time. I just go in and print off my registry purchase log and they don't say anything else about it.

My rant goes to Walmart. I went in looking for a cheaper robe for my hospital bag and they didn't have any!!! It's like some jerk bought all of the robes....there was nothing in the robe section. I was very disappointed.

  • Since we are ranting about stores, I'm going to rant about BRU. I received a $200 and $100 gift card at my shower. M and I went to use them tonight to finish off our registery and there was a zero balance on the $100 one. I know for a fact I haven't used it.

I called my aunt (she purchased it) to let her know and she told me that they took the money out her account so the balance should have been $100. She felt so bad and I felt awful I even said anything but she told me she would have been mad if I hadn't. Now she is on a mission to get it right with corporate but I don't know what they will be able to do.

I have also done this with target, very helpful :)

Yeah to be honest I think it would be pretty amazing customer service for them to let you return something without any packaging. The whole "limit" thing is annoying, but you just need to use a different license. I mean they are letting you return things without a receipt or (in your case) any packaging at all, and you're mad? I don't get it.

You are correct, it would have been amazing! And I was happy they were going to let me return it. I was just really frustrated with the fact that they didn't even tell me the return policy and then sent me 30 mins (and hour round trip) out of my way just to get the same answer. She never explained that to me the first time I was at the target and it doesn't tell you that there is a limit on the returns policy board behind the customer service desk. Also, the lady I worked with was absolutely rude and just made me angry. I was hoping that this was my last trip to target before I had the baby just because it's so far out of the way, but I guess not.

Motherhood maternity for me. Ugh!! Bought acre things online and went to return in store. They said I can only have credit unless I return through the mail. So I paid shipping both ways and ended up with nothing. Just threw away $13 and my bump bucks. Totally sucks because they don't have a decent plus size selection so I HAVE to shop online. I won't be shopping there in the future.
