Saying Hi :-)

Hi everyone, I just wanted to put a quick hello out there. This is my second pregnancy and I went in for my first appt today and doctor found two babies. I should be 8w based on my last period. Baby A is measuring 8w0d and Baby B is 7w5d but OB said both have good strong heartbeats and that he didn't think there was enough of a size difference to worry about vanishing twin syndrome. I'm in shock as my DH has twins in his family but I don't have in my direct line, although my mom told me she had cousins who were twins, and we conceived without IVF or anything.

Welcome and congratulations!! It is definitely surprising and shocking news! I have learned from my research that even without genetics (which I have a boat load of), being of advanced maternal age can also increase your chances of hyper ovulation, and therefore, twins. I like to think of it as the end of my ovaries' fireworks show.

ETA - not that I know your age, but that is another possible reason for twins.

  • I'm 28, but I am overweight and I've read that can contribute to it? Who knows, I guess it doesn't matter, I'm just shocked and excited and glad they are both looking good right now :-)

My fraternal twin boys. Born Sept 2013.
  • Congrats and welcome! :) Something else to keep in mind is that if your twins are identical (monozygotic) you have just as much chance as conceiving them as anyone else, regardless of genetics. Only fraternal twins run in families (b/c of the hyperovulation gene). Whatever the case may be, welcome and a happy and healthy 9ish months to you! :)
