Cold weather and carseats

What are you doing to keep baby warm in the infant carseat? I am using the jj cole bundle thing but I have heard warnings against it.

Re: Cold weather and carseats

  • As PP said, we just put a hat on & wrap a breathable blankie over LOs bottom half, then put a cover over the whole seat. Totally worth the 10 or so bucks they cost IMO

  • I had ds1 wear one of these a lot when we were out and about (in a manlier color of course).

He always stayed nice and snuggly. When we were outside I had a little blanket over him as well. But It was nice because I didn't need to keep the blanket on him at the mall or whatever. This was enough.

I live in an area with some pretty cold winters.

Although I live in CA, this what I will be doing when we go back East for the holidays. In fact, I think I bought him the same one only in blue. And I'm bringing a blanket to put over his lower half if need be.

  • I put her in a onsie and then a sleeper, then lay a blanket over her lap. When we go outside, I cover the car seat with the blanket or wear her.

  • We have one of the jj coles bundle mes as well, but I've been side eyeing it recently.
They say that putting them in thick clothes is bad as well so I'm at a loss. It can get to -40 here in the winter and I have no sweet clue how to keep her warm enough.

  • How does the bundle me compromise the belt? It has slits for them to go through.

  • Maybe I don't have a bundle me then. What I have zips around the outside so the seatbelt is directly on LO. Thanks!

  • We've just been covering her with a blanket, but I'm planning on getting one of those fleece suits for winter.

This is still a Bundle Me, it goes between the baby and the car seat (not the harness). They make "shower cap" styles now that are safe.

  • dang, I have a bundle me from my shower. Why the hell do they even sell things that aren't safe! It should be banned like the crib bumpers if it isn't considered safe for use. damn companies trying to make a dime so matter the risks.
  • fleece, hat and blanket. . . for the brief trips in and out.  it works alright.
  • @LokiLahve Maybe you could exchange it for this one?
  • I dress her warmly, then put a blanket over here, and then cover the car seat with the car seat canopy. She seems to do very well.

  • We have a kiddopotamus car seat cover that we have had since 2007. We use it with a blanket and normal clothes. It creates a warm pocket when you zip it and does not interfere with straps.
  • Long sleeves and legs with socks and a hat and then a light blanket on top if it is really chilly. If we are going to be outside I bring a jacket and put that on her once we arrive at our destination and remove the blanket .

That's the one we have. It goes around the whole car seat, and we fold up a blanket and lay it across his lap inside if it's cold. Even though it's pretty lightweight, it definitely keeps Tyler warm as he's actually started to sweat in it before.

  • Put baby in a sleeper with footies. Add little mits if you need to. Then tuck in a blanket around baby. If its considerably cold then a cap for baby. Zip into the car and you are good.

Then again, our region doesn't really have cold. The lowest we might get is a night freeze, but that doesn't happen until Feb/March. I think it snowed here in 2010.

This is what I'll be buying this weekend.

  • We have a toddler bundle me for the stroller. Highly recommend.

We use micro fleece and a blanket for winter for all kids.

  • Generally we pre warm the car and just put a thin fleece blanket over baby, we aren't outside that long in cold weather.  One layer fleece outfits are fine, but anything that is thick enough that you have to loosen the straps, is too thick to be worn in the car seat.

I just read an article about a baby ejected from the car (and carseat) because baby was wearing a snowsuit :(

Any after market add-ons are a no-no. That thing included.

That's terrifying. Definitely one of my biggest fears.

  • Are there advisories against the bundle me?

Any after market product (basically anything that didn't come with your car seat) cannot be added to it, or it will void your warranty and release the company of any liability if you were in a crash and your seat malfunctioned. This includes strap covers, and anything that goes between the baby and the seat or harness.

Fluffy things like the bundle me will compress in an accident introducing slack to the harness system and cause the harness not to work properly, or worse make enough room for your child to slip out of the seat.  You can cut a HUGE square out of the back of the bundle me so it doesn't go behind baby (except by head and feet) and that is acceptable, but it's just easier to get the shower cap style ones, or just use a blanket and hat
