When to stop formula?

I'm currently BF but thinking about weaning to formula. LO won't take a bottle so I'm considering the sippy cup as an option, as it was suggested to me yesterday. But I know nothing about formula feeding. I know they say BF or FF to a year but do you just switch to cows milk at one year? I know some people BF for well over a year, is this a substitute for cows milk then? Very confused here.

  • I FF for the first year and then switch to cow's milk.

Did you give the same amount of cows milk as formula? Did you put it in a bottle or a cup?

  • A lot of doctors recommend offering around 20oz of whole milk a day after a year old to help baby get enough calories, fat, protein, and calcium. It isn't a requirement, though - it's just a very easy way to help them get those nutrients. You can skip milk all together if your kid eats lots of cheese/protein/green veg. Stick with formula or breastmilk until at least one year, though.

  • At one year, I still BF DS1 but also gave him cow's mik.  I used cow's milk for when we were not together (I work out of the home), and BF when we were together.

  • I don't know about formula, but if you BF past a year, you don't have to give cow's milk.
  • I switched to wcm with dd at a year.  Our pediatrician said to give between 16 and 24 oz of dairy a day, but no more because too much can hurt a child's iron absorption.  I just gave it to her in her bottle or sippy just as if it were formula.  She loved it instantly.  But some kids don't, especially since it is cold.
  • Our pedi said to switch to WCM after 1 year. We slowly switched - she was having 4oz of formula, so first we did 1 oz WCM, 3 oz formula mixed together, then 2/2, then 3/1, and finally switched to only WCM.

And @holly321, we warmed it up because DD1 wouldn't drink it cold. And when we got rid of the bottle, she stopped drinking milk completely. I was/am the same way. I don't drink milk. It makes me gag. So I don't push it on DD1, either. She eats cheese and other calcium sources.
