Has anyone ever tried felting?

I saw some elbow patches that are made with wool roving. There are no instructions but I got the roving and the needle thing. What setting do you put your iron on and do you just stick the needle straight in or do you turn it once you've punctured the fabric?

I read this as felching, which is definitely dirty.
    Me too.
    Me three.

I've never felted on purpose. But every now and then DH destroys a delightful article of wool clothing by putting it through the washer and dryer. It's the same effect I think.
So what you're saying is that I should just throw the wool into the washer with the item that I want it on and hope for the best? That might be the easier approach. Maybe it will look more artistic that way.
