Braxton Hicks this early??!

I think I may have started experiencing some Braxton Hicks contractions this week, but I'm a first-timer here, so I'm really not sure. And I also feel like it's way way too early. I'm only 17 weeks.

So, naturally, I'm worrying.

I'll try to describe it. I feel a rather quick tightening of my uterus that is not at all painful. It lasts about 30 seconds and then it dissipates. It has come, at the most, two an hour, and it seems to be more likely in the evening. If I push on my uterus, it feels like I'm poking a tightly flexed muscle.

Are these Braxton Hicks? Is anyone else experiencing these yet?!!

I have an OB appt on Tuesday. Hopefully, I'll be able to hold out and just ask him then. I'm also going to try to be extra vigilant about my water intake tomorrow. I'm probably taking in half a gallon.

Mine started at 22w -- and never stopped. No amount of procardia shut them up!

That said, if I were you, I would just call and see what they think. The first time they had me come in to get monitored, to see if they were real contractions or not. They gave me a shot of brethine to calm things down (that lasted all of a few hours). Otherwise, you'll just spend all day today worrying about it (been there, done that).

  • I'm 13.5 and started a couple at 13. Crazy. BUT these are babies #7&8 and I always have BH ctx usually starting 16-18 wks. I'm not worried until they turn consistent and I'll be in the hospital for PTL lol
  • This is my second pregnancy, first multiples pregnancy, but I freaked when I was having BH contractions at 17 weeks too. I called my OB and she said it was fine, as long as they aren't consistent and not painful. They mellowed out after a week or so, now I only have 2-4 a day at 21 weeks. Make sure you are ruling out being tired, over doing it or dehydration. Take it easy and drink lots of water.

  • Mine started around 18w....first pregnancy too. Definitely drink lots of water, and call your OB if you're concerned. Most likely they'll say that less than 4 in an hour is OK, but they might want to monitor you more too. GL and take it easy!

  • Yes! Mine started at 16 wks....and haven't stopped since! (now 31 wks)
  • It's normal. Sadly. Not fun. If you have time take a warm bath and they should go away :)

Mine started at 14w and lasted the whole PG. I was ultimately diagnosed with an irritable uterus because I would frequently get 6-8/hour. They happened every day, all day long. I made several trips to L&D for PTL scares.

Having said that, if they get painful or ramp up to more then 4-5/hour, give your OB a call.
