Alright JnK, here I go!

I joined a Biggest Loser competition! The first weigh in is a week from today. I can't find the post you typed out for me last year with all of your pointers!!

Here's the plan: eat Paleo, Monday: lift, Tuesday: spin and do 15 minutes of Pilates, Wednesday: lift, Thursday: spinning, Friday: boot camp, Saturday: walking/jogging Pilates at home

Should I have more of a plan then this??

Re: Alright JnK, here I go!

  • Does boot camp involve weights? If not, ditch the pilates after spin and do weights then.

ETA: let me be a little more clear-do lower body weights on Monday, then upper body weights on Tuesday.
Boot camp is a stroller boot camp class and it does involve weights (5-10 lb) and a ton of training using body weight, like triceps dips, squats, and lunges.

I teach spinning and pilates so it's kind of something I have to keep up with regardless. The short pilates sessions are after my spinning classes and on the reformer (so weight training/resistance training). I'm going to already be at the studio those nights so I figure I'd just stay and workout.

I worked at a gym for a while and most of the trainers there did building competitions. I lift the way that the trainers that do competitions lift. I do 5 minutes of a warm up on a cardio machine, lift 10 minutes, 5 minutes super hard cardio, 10 minutes lifting, 5 minutes hard cardio, 10 minutes lifting, finish with 15 minutes of lighter cardio. I usually do as you are describing, upper body one day and lower the other.

Diet is what I really struggle with, well, that and I have a really messed up knee. So, sometimes the boot camp really hurts. But, the boot camp class challenges me in ways that I don't challenge myself.

I was thinking of adding a 10 minute walk in the mornings before I eat breakfast. But, I just don't think with 3 hungry kids, 3 hungry dogs, and a hungry geriatric cat, that I can even sneak away for 10 minutes. Maybe I can do it for the last week or so of the contest.

  • Oh, and the studio that I teach spinning at doesn't have hard weights. I think the Pilates Reformer is harder than weights.

  • Oh, well if you know what you're doing don't listen to me!

Uh, I could see how you might take that statement the wrong way...don't. Obviously you know your stuff!
I just fail in the food department. :( I totally know WHAT to eat, I just don't do it. Man, it's even hard to say that.

  • Good luck, girl!!
Now, for my tips. This is a game -- play it. If you're really "just trying to lose weight" there was no reason to pay money and sign up for weigh ins.
Leading up to the weigh in: eat. Right before first weigh in eat a full meal and drink as much water as you can.
After that, Paleo is a great way to go. Jay and I eat Paleo when I'm not KU'd. I can't wait to get back to it. Juli over at PaleOMG has some simple but delicious recipes. Don't count calories, just eat clean.
Before subsequent weigh ins be sure to make meals smaller and more frequent and watch water consumption.
The last week you drink normal amounts of water but add dandelion root tea all day everyday until final weigh in.
I found that eating Paleo and "just" long-distance running made me hold on to weight so definitely get some sort of weight lifting/ resistence training in. Do you like 30DS? Do you think you have 25 minutes each day to do something like that on top of what you already have planned?
You're going to have to adjust your routine and your eating at some point during the competition. Keep a food journal so that you can see where clean up can be done. Like, bacon and sweet potatoes are fine for Paleo, but in competition I would cut them out 2 weeks before final weigh in.
Good luck, dear!! :) I'll be rootin for ya!!

  • @JaysonandKristin, you are dirty! But, I see your point.
  • Thanks for all of the tips!! :)

I was going to cut salt etc the last 2 weeks before the final weigh in. I didn't know about the dandelion root tea.

Is that okay to do while nursing? I have a very low supply so I worry.

I'm going to have to add extra workouts in so I keep losing. I just have to figure out how to when I'm already sleep deprived and can't manage my time. It is from November 2 to January 7. I will probably plateau during that time and ill have to figure our how to get through it.

  • I used the tea while nursing, BUT if you have supply issues, I can't recommend it. That makes me nervous. :(
You work at a gym, right? You have unlimited access to trainers? Get some help from them when you start to plateau.

  • I used to work at a gym. I just work at a little studio now. We don't really have weights. We only have yoga, Pilates Reformers, and spinning bikes.

I'm still friends with many of the trainers I used to work with, so I will go to them if I can't figure out how to get out of a plateau. I know that I need to constantly change up my workouts and try and sleep (sleep isn't possible right now).

  • Can I be an asshole and give you a sarcastic "sleep when the baby sleeps?" [-X

Totally kidding. Hopefully, you get some shut eye by accident every once in awhile...

  • Lol! Nice! Yeah, it's totally possible to sleep when the baby sleeps... If I want one of the other kids to die! Or to never ever ever finish dinner or cleaning.

This morning I locked the two big boys in my bedroom and brought the baby into my bathroom while I showered. I was in the shower for all of five minutes and Liam head butted Jack and gave him a bloody nose and used my hospital grade breast pump that I'm renting. I didn't even ask Liam what he was using the breast pump for... Sometimes, I just don't want to know.

I can't imagine the crap they would get into if I fell asleep.

So scary and true.  I'll be in your camp in a few weeks.  Team tired, and starting a round of Biggest Loser in January (it should be a good one as all the folks make their NY Resolutions).

In the meantime, good luck, and definitely post your progress each week after weigh in.  I'm totally interested in how you'll be doing.  I have a friend of mine who is competing in our local BL (she and I previously did a partners challenge together), we do a couple mile loop at least once per week, and we catch up.  It's nice to stay in touch with how life will be after pregnancy is over.  I cannot wait to have my body back to myself.

  • I seriously cannot believe you're almost finished being pregnant!

I would think a January competition would be super difficult. At least with this one it's over thanksgiving and Christmas. I'm hoping people drop out. Ill check in here after my weigh ins.

I have honestly kinda been living it up this week. I just finished a 3 week challenge and I have a week until the biggest loser. I've been having wine every night and had two pieces of Halloween candy today.
