6 wk olds stomach on formula/bm combo

My 6 wk old seems like he really struggles to go to the bathroom, pooping only! We've tried a few different formulas to mix with my bm (I don't produce enough to exclusively feed him) and enfamil gentlease seems to finally agree with him with spitting up and comfort but when he's going to the bathroom he really seems to struggle sometimes is this normal???

Re: 6 wk olds stomach on formula/bm combo

  • I don't know about normal, but we are also doing a combo of bm and gentlease and LO pooped less as we transitioned to it from the newborn formula. He does look like he's struggling to poop too, but I think that might have to do with the fact that his poops are less frequent and therefor bigger.

  • My LO is almost 4 weeks and we have the same issues. We use Similac Neosure bc he is a preemie. But I also EP but don't produce enough. What I have been doing is giving bottles of pure breast milk all day and the 2 nigh time feedings of pure formula. I was told there is no need to mix half and half. At first it seemed that the formula was causing more gas and more explosive poops lol but now I am not so sure it seems he has adjusted to it. I do believe though that breast milk in general is supposed to be easier on the stomach so I think it's pretty normal.

  • My baby is 9 weeks and on a combination of BM and Similac Sensitive. He sometimes seems like he has trouble going poo too. I make sure that I'm pumping for long periods of time so he's getting hind milk. Hind milk helps them go poop.

I know the Similac Sensitive is very binding for babies. I would guess the formula you're using is the same. Are you nursing at all or just pumping? If you're nursing and pumping try pumping right after you nurse. If you're just pumping, try making pumping sessions longer.

  • Baby's muscles are not quite strong enough to easily poop...is your LO's poop hard or soft? If it is soft, then LO is fine, just dealing with muscles and learning how things work still. If it is hard, then a course of action should be taken.

My baby grunts and pushes a lot, my husband figured out that massaging the sides of his belly helped him.

Yes it is soft. It just seems like it takes a while to finish and now it seems like he's getting diaper rash that I can't seem to get rid of and it has just started here recently  :(
I change his diaper very often for that reason. Just hate seeing him uncomfortable!!
