Daycare Naps

How does your daycare do naps?

We toured one yesterday, and the 1-2 year olds take a nap after lunch - on a mat. LO usually takes his first nap around 9:00AM and sleeps for ~3 hours. He either sleeps in his crib at home or a pack and play at our in home daycare. I seriously think if he has to wait that long to take a nap, he won't eat lunch and he will end up losing his shit.

Re: Daycare Naps

  • Our daycare does naps from about 12:30-3 (sometimes shorter), and the kids nap on mats on the floor. Only the under 1-year-olds get cribs and naps whenever they want. He'll probably surprise you with how he adapts. Both my kids did fine pretty quickly.

  • My daycare now that she is in the toddler room all within the 3 months of each other. They all nap on mats on the floor after lunch. She adjusted well when we switched in September.

The toddler rooms get lunch first so they eat around 10:30 and get ready for nap at 11. They sleep on cots and we provide a crib sheet and blanket. He usually sleeps for 2-2:30 hours there. He sleeps for over 3 hours at home.

  • Our daycare does one nap a day now, after lunch. He sleeps on a cot. He doesn't sleep very well, usually only 1.5 hour nap. They transitioned him around when he turned one.

At home I follow his cues and we still do two naps. DH and I both enjoy catching up on sleep (and the opportunity to DTD) on the weekends so we don't mind the two nap schedule.

  • Like many have said, they do it on cots from about 12:30-3.

DD still needs a morning nap though so they will put her down for one if she seems to need it and she still takes one on T/Th, the days she's home with DH.  My kids only go to DC on MWF.

  • Naps at daycare have been an issue since day 1.  Not on the part of my provider, but for Lily.  When she went back to DC after being home with me for the summer, she transitioned to 1 nap after lunch.  She is at an in-home daycare and I think if Lily would lay down in the morning, our DCP would be fine with that, but Lily wants to play all morning and then crashes after lunch.  On the weekends, I still try to have her take two naps, because I think she needs it.  At home it's usually two 1-1.5 hour naps and at daycare it's 1 two hour nap.

  • If you look back - you'll see we've been in nap / sleep hell with daycare - and I've finally resigned - daycare is different then home (period).  We get one nap on a mat (I think its group peer pressure that makes this work - fyi - they all lay down and sleep at the same time - she wont' sleep that way at home - but there?  no issues) - so she sleeps 1-2 (yeah right - its normally 1 - 1.5) hours at 12:30 at daycare.. then nothing until bed.  (sometimes a short nap at 4 when we get home but thats becoming less normal)

Weekends?  Girl is down for the count well before 11 most saturdays - sleeps 1- 3 hours - then again around 2/3 for another 1-3 hours.  Its just different.  It seems weird and like it would never work - but it does.

  • Hannah takes 1, 1.5 hour nap around 11:45-12. It's no good.

  • They take one nap a day in the toddler room on cots.  I *think* it's at 11, before lunch.

  •  At daycare, naps are from 12:30 - 2:30, on a little cot.  DD will do about 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours, not good.  At home, she always takes a 1/2 hou nap around 10, then the 12:30 and sometimes another half hour around 4:30ish. I hate the nap schedule at daycare, it's just not enough for her, but it seems all the daycare's around me do the 1 nap a day thing.

  • When Sophie started daycare about 6 weeks ago she was napping twice a day. They respected that and tried to continue with that schedule. However S wised up pretty quick that none of the other kids were napping when she did, and then she started fighting her first nap.

We had about a month of 1 nap, less than an hour long per day. It sucked.

She is now inching towards the 1.5 hour mark. It's a slow process, but she's adapting.

They have lunch at 11:30/12ish and nap right after - usually around 12/12:30ish.

  • All of this feedback makes me feel much better. I also think that the reason he gets so sleepy now is because the TV is running constantly and there isn't much interaction. I am SO looking forward to a structured environment for him. I am sure he will be fine, but thank you all for the reassurance!

  • We are just at an in-home day care provider so DS gets to nap on demand. He naps for usually 1 hour in the morning, usually when they go for a walk, and then for about 1.5 hours in the afternoon around 1:30 in the playpen.

This is pretty consistent to what he does at home.

I can't imagine trying to get him to nap on a mat. He doesn't sit still long enough for that! I guess they adapt though.
