Daylight Savings

When we turn the clocks back, what do you do about bedtime? DH and I were thinking of making bedtime later slowly by 10 minutes leading up to the change, so then bedtime would be at the same time. Would that work or do you just leave it alone and hope they adjust? And I certainly don't want DS's bedtime to be 5:45-6pm!

Re: Daylight Savings

  • Honestly, I've never had a problem with Daylight Savings Time.  I just pretend like it never happened and the kids may have one or two days where their schedules are a little funny, but overall it doesn't really change a thing.  I have, however, used it as a way to change schedules before if I was wanting to push back or forward their naps or bedtime.  It's a good chance to do that.  But if you don't want to, just pretend like it never happened.

I will say though, that sometimes I notice my kids getting tired earlier and sleeping in later during the winter.  It has nothing to do with the clock though.  I think that kids' bodies are more naturally adjusted to circadian rhythms, so they sleep when it's dark and wake when it's light.  I always look forward to winter because my kids automatically sleep better.  Summer is the opposite - early risers at 6:00 am.  So glad that's over!!!

Hmmm. Guess that would explain why my early riser was still passed out at 7:00 this morning and I had to wake her up to bring her to my parents' house before work!! It was the best night we've had in awhile, down at 7:45, eat at 12:15, back down at 12:45, still out at 7. I got 8 hours of sleep, I don't remember the last time that happened! Lately it's been more in the 6-6.5 hour range, which is not enough when it's broken up. I think I may like winter. ;-)

  • omg, I am so jealous of you ladies who have not had problems with time changes!  DS1's sleep is always a mess.  I typically spend most of my day cursing whoever came up with the idea for DST!  Some of my friends suggested trying to start adjusting bedtime in increments a week or so up to the day. (although it never worked for DS1)

  • Eh, we'll see when we get there. I don't think DST will be the big clincher, but the shorter days.

For those of us working full time, without the luxury of having our kids sleep in, I think we could be facing different circumstances. And the idea of my kid going to bed even earlier isn't something I look forward to, seeing as my time in the evenings with her is already limited.

  • The general rule of thumb when it comes to adjusting for time changes is one day per hour change. DH and I can adjust faster when doing our 7-hr time zone changes btw Europe and the US, but the girls seem to need 7 days. I figure DST is 1 hour, so 1 day to get them on the new schedule. I find spring has been a little harder than fall for us.
