For those adventurous with food...

I'm genuinely curious about something.

First off I will say, I'm really wimpy with the solids I give DS. We had a minor choking incident with banana of all things last month, so while I've been making coarser purees, I haven't ventured much into table/finger food with the exception of puffs.

We had some friends over the other day and they have a DS one month older than ours. I was gobsmacked at how this kid chowed! But what kind of made me give the side-eye was what they fed him - pieces of pizza and apple pie! Now I am so not the food police (@DublinMama if you read this you know it to be true!) but I was just kind of like, No!! So much salt! So much sugar! Ahh!!

Obviously, I didn't say anything, but I was just sort of wondering if that's in the realm of typical.

Re: For those adventurous with food...

  • I have never fed my daughter pizza or apple pie but she has had some of my chicken, french fries, macaroni, green beens, mango, applesauce, jello etc. I am a diabetic so I tend to eat on the healthier side. I try to use other seasonings as an alternative to salt.

  • haha, I saw you give him that sweet potato fry! :P To chime in, I would be apprehensive to give my DS anything that complex in ingredients and empty in calories that early, regardless of how well he could chew. My SIL threw a birthday party for our niece who is 2. Her younger sister, who is two months younger than our LOs on this board was given a piece of birthday cake. I don't know why I find it ok to do at 1 yo and not five months earlier, but I thought it was a little much.

DS is still on purees, though they are much thicker and chunkier than earlier days. He's also allowed some table food.  But I make all his food, so I know exactly what's in it. At this age, we are actively avoiding anything overly processed, or like you said, loaded with sugar/sodium. As far as I'm concerned, there's plenty of time for pizza and junk food, so why push it? I also sort of think it sets you up to have a kiddo who only prefers junk food because he ate from the forbidden tree so early...

  • We are doing BLW so she basically eats what we eat but we are foodies and make everything from scratch 90% of the time.

DD has eaten okra, green beans, apples, chicken, sausage, beef, sweet potato, broccoli, egg yolk, pears, kale (just once), avocado, bell pepper and maybe one or two other things that I can't remember.

One of these days she will have pizza and apple pie (DH makes awesome pizza with a homemade sourdough crust but even later down the road I'm sure there will be a chuck e cheese or two and I make apple pie every thanksgiving) but there are reasonable limits to everything.

  • Same here in the BLW side of things, and I make sure DS is eating fresh fruits and veggies, meats and good grains. Though, the whole process has created a bit of a food beast... If I am eating in front of him without sharing, he gets pretty insistent. So I have cheated here or there with him because I don't believe a taste here or there of things will ruin his taste buds for life. We were at thanksgiving and I gave him some tastes of pumpkin pie. And the week before that he had a few crumbs of cake. IMO, it's NBD. He gets a few tastes, he obviously enjoys it, and I like sharing with him. It's also a controlled intake. I would never give him a slice of his own. If I was having pizza in front of him, I would probably break off some crumbs of crust or a piece of veggie.

  • We do BLW too, but I don't think I'd be giving DS pizza or apple pie. Because of the salt and sugar, like you said. When we've gone out for pizza with DS, I usually pick off veggies for him. This is kind of gross, but I lick them off so there's not too much grease or salt on them lol.

In general, I believe in moderation when it comes to food. He will definitely have pizza and pie in his life, but we will eat good food at home. DH and I like to eat as healthy as we can when we're home so that when we go out we aren't concerned with what's in the food, we just enjoy it. :)

Wow, I totally went on a tangent. Anyway, I would have side-eyed your friends decisions too. :)
  • DS has had bites of pizza crust and some cookie. He loves to try what we are eating. Mostly I try to give him the veggie purées or bits of whatever veggie I made for dinner, but he isn't eating much in the solids department. I'm okay with him having tastes of stuff. Everything in moderation.

    I like cookies.

  • I completely agree with moderation! As DublinMama referenced, I've given DS bites of sweet potato fry and I gave him a taste of mashed potatoes which had butter and seasonings - I just haven't give these things as whole meal. And by no means was I trying to come off as super judgy or anything - I just was kind of surprised by the whole thing!

  • DH is the anxious one in our house and at the slightest gag, he freaks out so DS only gets a little table food.  I understand the hesitancy - I wanted to try BLW and on the first try DS chocked on a piece of sweet potato and I had to scoop it out with my finger because it was obviously obstructing his airway and he stopped breathing.  But I recognized that it was part of the learning process.

After getting used to puffs, DS now loves to have toast with me in the morning.  I keep offering new table foods but the majority of his foods are still pureed.

I'm not super crazy about food - we only buy organic when it is on sale, for example - and while I understand the judgement about introducing sugars and fats so early, I also recognize that the amount that a LO would consume is so minimal.

All of our kids will eat grown-up food.  They will eat junk food.  They will eat healthy food. Some babies will start eating earlier than others because of their own and their parents' comfort but it will happen.

At least, that is what I tell myself when DH freaks out about DS gagging on peas.

  • We've gotten pizza once or twice in the last few months and give DD2 pieces of crust to chew on. Meh. I'm bigger on trying to avoid too much sugar. She doesn't get cake or pie. And when I cook I use very little salt, so an occasional pizza crust isn't going to hurt anything.
