CMV

Hi I usually post on 3T but thought you all may be able to answer my question better. For those using donor sperm, did you waive CMV positive status? I'm negative and the CMV negative pool is so much smaller. Wondering what the likelihood is of CMV. Thanks.
Ready to take the road less traveled.

Re: CMV

  • I know a little bit about CMV since my last egg donor tested positive for the active form of the infection and we had to cancel our cycle.  I know CMV is more likely to be transmitted through sperm than through eggs.  Can you discuss this question with your RE?  Maybe s/he could even put you in touch with an infectious disease specialist to discuss the potential risks and the likelihood of transmission.

  • When I shopped, I only looked at negative donors. Since one of the things that stuck with me from nursing school was the TORCH diseases are bad news in pregnancy. I agree you should have the talk with your doctor about risks/ benefits.... good luck!

  • I am cmv negative and only considered cmv negative donors. I used CCB, and frankly appreciated that it helped narrow the choices...we were still overwhelmed by how many there were. If you aren't tied to a specific bank, there are a lot of cmv negative donors out there. My take was 'why take an unnecessary risk...'

    good luck!

  • I am negative as well and am only using negative donors, my RE strongly encouraged this. It does really limit the pool but I just don't want to risk it.
