Pre-Halloween Events...overkill?

I love a good Halloween party but I have seen so many advertisements for trunk or treat or trick or treating at the mall and such this up coming weekend.  Do you bring your kids to all of these events before the actual event or are you like me and think it is overkill?  I think it takes away from the fun and excitement of the actual real Halloween!

Re: Pre-Halloween Events...overkill?

  • Yeah, it occurred to me the other day that I'm dressing my kids up 4 times total, with all the pre-Halloween things we're going to, plus Halloween.  At this age they definitely won't understand the difference among all the events, but they enjoy them and at least their costumes were money well spent.

  • The more use out of her costume the better.

I am just sad this year that our annual Halloween parade--which was ALWAYS on Halloween in our town--for 75 years! (We trick or treated on the 30th) just got moved to the Saturday before Halloween. *sighs*

We do have our cousin's birthday party to go to this year--it is a Halloween barbecue. I full intend to have Reese where her costume. :)

  • I am happy that DD has multiple opportunities to wear her costume so it doesn't really bug me.  DD will wear her costume at least 3 times.

  • They have Halloween parties at school, but no costumes. One of our neighbors has a pre-party before ToTing on Halloween. But that's it, we don't really do any events. If they wanted to, we would, but October weekends are pretty busy

  • We do Fall Festival at school and in the past have done Fall Festival at church. I hate those trunk or treat things, so I've always avoided them like the plague.

One of ours does this, I love it. It's a great tradition and great for the neighborhood.

I know, it is so nice! We all bring a dish or beverage to share and get a great pic of all the kids in their costumes

A friend does this every year. It's great.
  • we're going to two events this weekend - I love Halloween and can't wait to get us all dressed up multiple times, hehe :-)  There is trick or treating at the old downtown area at the businesses on Saturday, and on Sunday we are doing a Monster Dash 1mile fun run in costumes....carnival afterwords.  I do everything and go every where I can, ha!

  • I love getting use out of the kids costumes!

We have a neighborhood Halloween parade and gathering. DS has a Halloween party at school, and DD has two: one with our mom group and one with our mom/tot program.

  • I like the kids getting use out of their costumes. The kids dressed up for the aquariums fall o ween celebration last weekend, this weekend were doing the y's Halloween party on sat and boo at the zoo on Sunday. Then Halloween day of course.

  • I don't mind the idea of other Fall/Halloween-type things, like costume parties, parades, etc. I do think it's overkill to have trick or treating at school, then trick or treating at the office, then trick or treating at the mall, etc.....to me that takes away from the "real" trick or treating on Halloween night.

  • Where my aunt lives they have a Halloween parade and ToTing the Saturday before Halloween. It has always been that way. We go and make a day out of it. She cooks chili, sloppy joes and hot dogs and there is tons of snacky foods. It's always so much fun and most of the family is there. Plus my cousin now owns the bar around the corner so the adults will have an after Halloween party as well ;)

  • We are doing a family party Friday night, DD1 has a party Saturday with classmates and our gymnastics gym is having a party Sunday afternoon, so we'll go do that too.  I may decide to take my little ones to the zoo event while DD1 is at her party too.

I figure if we can do more over the weekend, it makes it more fun too, right?

I love them all.  Honestly, I would prefer to hit these events than have my kids sitting at home doing the same thing all the time.  IME it does not take away from the actual Halloween night at all.
We usually do 1 of the Trick or Treat Streets or a Trunk or Treat, the School Fall Party and Halloween night. it's also nice because if Halloween is a wash out or freezing cold, and we have to cut it a bit short, they are fine with that! it's not like they are allowed to even dress up in school anymore. Would you seriously, rather have no other events?

Even Christmas time, we have extended family holidays, tree trimmings, breakfast with Santa, etc and but it doesn't take away from Christmas day at all.

Yes I would.  I love Halloween but I would rather just have one night of it.  I just think that if my kids put their costumes on a few times, they will be over it by the time Halloween comes.  I am impressed that other people can get their kids to wear costumes so much!

That being said, we are doing a Fun Run this weekend and the kids are wearing their costumes for that, and then my son wears his for a school party, and we have a block party on Halloween.  I am not against it or anything for other people, I have just noticed that there are so many things advertised, like trick or treating at the mall etc.

  • I love Halloween, and I also like to get a lot of use out of DD's costume, so we do a few pre-Halloween events.  We went to our library's party last week, and this weekend we are going to the party at our local rec center.  These events are mostly about games and crafts with just a snack or a small amount of candy.  Then we'll go trick-or-treating on Halloween.  I don't think it's overkill at all.

We only have a couple of events, but they all happen on Halloween, so there is that too.  I can take the girls to the Library in the morning of the 31st, in costume, I can take them to the mall between 3 &5 on the 31st, and then they can go that night around the neighborhood.  We aren't doing all of those, in fact we'll probably only do the actual trick or treating, but if we did that would make for a busy day!  And where can you not wear costumes to school anymore?  I'm not in the school mode yet, but my nieces are in grades 1 & 2 and they are looking forward to wearing their costumes to school for the Halloween party!

  • We go to the country club Halloween party (haunted house, hayrides and pumpkin painting) this Sunday and then on actual Halloween we ToT with our two good sets of neighbors. Between all of us we have seven kids aged 4 and under, so we take pics at one house, ToT for about half an hour and then go to one of our houses for pizza and adult beverages while the kids play. We all dress up, adults included.
