  • You don't need to know how to cook to make baby food!  Can you turn your stove on, put water in a pot and add veggies?  How about push a button on the blender?  If you, you are in business!

Really, all you need to do is boil/steam/bake the vegetables until they are soft then strain them into the blender/food processor and blend adding some of the cooking water as needed for the desired consistency.  Sweet potatoes are good to start with.

Actually, two of the best starter foods don't even require cooking!  Raw mashed bananas and/or avocados are very good for baby (especially avocados!)

Start off with just a little bit in the mid morning.  You probably won't get much in his mouth, it's just to get him used to it.  Start with 3 or 4 spoonfuls.  Do the same vegetable/fruit 3 to 4 days in a row just to make sure there are no reactions.  Once you have tried a few foods, you can mix them,

     Good luck!

BTW, I haven't started solids yet but I have read up A LOT about it since I will be making the food at home.

  • Hi Givi!

I'm not much of a cook either! But I totally love making my own baby food...Mady digests it much better than bottled food and its so much more nutritious and healthier.

Here is Mady's schedule (I'm only giving you her food schedule not her bottles)

9:30am - breakfast - 3 tblspoons of oatmeal or rice or barley or mixed cereal.....this is mixed with 2 tblspoons of fresh fruit (either applesauce...unsweetened adult applesauce is much cheaper if you buy by the quart versus the baby food applesauce.....bananas just mashed up....if i dont have time for fresh fruit i actually mix half of one stage 2 fruit in her breakfast)

1pm - lunch time - 5 tblspoons of anything i make for her (now she's eating white meat) - and 1 whole stage 2 fruit

6:30pm - evening dinner - 3 tblspoons of mixed veggies (i usually buy frozen veggies steam them and blend them...if not i buy them fresh and do the same....if i have neither than i give her 1 whole stage 2 veggie meal)....i follow that with 1.5 tblspoons of another fresh fruit

    some recipes for you:

malanga (that was actually the first homemade food i made for her)

1 whole malanga root, peeled, boiled, once tender i blended and mixed with nursery water until desired texture (this usually makes enough for like 5 dinners or lunches)

once you get the hang of making it you can mix and match....for example, i usually do malanga and sweet potatoes now for her.

once you start incorporating meats its the same thing....

    today i made turkey soup:

1 whole quart of low sodium fat free chicken broth

    1 turkey breast

    1 malanga root

    1 sweet potato

    a cup of corn

and i added garlic, onion, and 2 slices of yellow pepper for flavor (i removed these items once i was ready to blend)

once everything was tender i added about half a cup of noodles and let it steam

it was enough for our dinner plus 6 dinners/lunches for mady

---i know this is a lot of info....if you want more ideas let me know....i think i posted some recipes on my blog...look for them under the october or november posts! gl!!!!!

  • btw...remember that the amount of food i give mady reflects on her age, eating desire, and weight. don't start mikey on the same amount i give mady....give less tablespoons until he gets the hang of it....i'm sure he will love it! my nanny is always giving me pats on the back....she's always complimenting me on the fact how mady just loves to gobble up her food!

  • My best advice bookmark wholesomebabyfood.com

They have easy directions on how to make first veggies. Sweet potatoes is super easy to make. Don't make a huge batch at first because you want to make sure he'll like it. Sometimes you might not get the texture just right either. But anyone can do this, you do not have to be a chef!
