Trying to Get Pregnant

NTTGPR: How do you heat up your coffee?

So, I fried two microwaves in one day. The one my husband had before we were married (so, about six years old) fried when I tried to open it while it was running, thought better of it, and closed it back up. Boom. Went out. We plugged in our brand-new, out-of-the-box microwave someone bought us for our wedding and it runs constantly. The display's all effed up and it won't let you push any buttons. So we got rid of it.

We've now lived three weeks without a microwave and, honestly, we're not buying another one. I got my counter space back and all of our food tastes better in the oven/stove top anyway. WIN!

Except for my coffee.

I make a pot in the morning and drink on it all day. Sometimes, if there's any left, I'll drink it the next morning, too. (I'm no coffee snob obviously). But without a microwave, how should I heat it up? I have a Tassimo, but it's so much more cost-effective for me to make one whole pot instead of using two pods every morning and two every afternoon for fresh coffee. My husband suggested pouring the leftover coffee in a pan and heating it up on the stove, but I don't know. I feel like it would taste funny?

Or should I just spring for a coffee pot that will keep it warm without brewing more?

I DID NOT MEAN TO WRITE THIS MUCH.

Re: NTTGPR: How do you heat up your coffee?

  • My first thought was, yuck!  I don't like heated up coffee.

How about investing in a good quality thermos?  One that's lined so the coffee doesn't get an off taste.  Really good ones will keep your coffee hot all day.

  • I don't like the taste of coffee that's been heated up, but I pour coffee into a thermal carafe to keep it warm. It works pretty well.

  • I'd go with an insulted mug. If you need to reheat, you could probably do the stove - top and just make sure you don't let it get to boiling.

Does tassimo have the little reusable cups like Keurig does? I use My K cup over and over- it's perfect for me because I have several cups of coffee throughout the day.
I... have no idea! Maybe it does? I'm always confused by my Tassimo. We bought it because my husband LOVES the hot chocolate pods, but it always looks like there's a lot leftover in the pod... I'm not sure if it's grounds or not. I should probably try reusing it again!

I loved not having a microwave until I realized that heating up leftovers was no longer a five minute affair, but a half an hour one.  I like my food fast when I'm hungry!

I suppose you could put the coffee into a tea pot and warm it up?  That seems ridiculous.

I'd spring for a coffee pot that keeps the coffee warm.  Or buy a refillable pod for your current machine.
Hahaha! Right? My husband suggested pouring it in a pot and I was all, "I feel like Ma Ingalls right now, what the hell am I doing?"

I usually do! I love some iced coffee, but with the cooler temps, I like taking a break outside on the deck with something hot, you know?

Suggestion for others with leftover coffee, by the way: I've started pouring it into ice cube trays so when I do have iced coffee, I have coffee cubes! Then your coffee doesn't get watered down.

I like mine watered down and warm rather than hot, so I'll pour about half a cup of hot water in with my cold coffee.
This is how I have my coffee as well, but it has to be fresh!

I can't stand re-heated coffee, so I don't have any advice on that. But we have this pot, and we love it. I did a ton of research b/c I drink multiple cups a day, but I only like fresh coffee, and couldn't stomach the cost of K-Cups. It has a reusable pod basket for the single cup option, and we bought the Mr. Coffee reusable basket for the 12 cup option. We have never purchased the pods for it, so I can't speak of those. We use the 12 cup on the weekends b/c we blow through it pretty fast, but the single cup on the week days.

It's a great coffee maker, and it looks like it might solve your problem.

I was going to suggest this as well. I have one from Crate and Barrel (~$30) and I swear the coffee/tea stays hot for days! I know this because my MIL filled it and left in the office for two days. When I poured out the tea, it was still hot!

  • I am a coffee snob I make my coffee in a chemex drip pot. I can heat it up by the cup in the microwave if I need to or my carafe fits on my gas stove on my simmer burner on low. The thing I love about my chemex is the coffe doesn't get bitter the longer it sits like reg coffee does.
    Fucking bump!!!!
  • I have nothing to add since I don't drink coffee, but wanted to share this since it cracks me the fuck up.

I make coffee and tea everyday for DH and I do it this way too. I have one that is just for coffee and one that is just for tea, and it will stay hot for almost 24 hours :).
  • Oh my! Yucky! I'm surprised you can still drink coffee that has baked for that long.

I second the suggestion of brewing smaller pots and drinking them fresh. Otherwise maybe invest in a Keurig or similar?

I know! Apparently I'm different. I'm scared to admit that I used to drink instant coffee... I would hide the jar when my best friend came over because she was a TOTAL coffee snob.

guuuuuurrrllll.... Get a keurig and get the pod where you can put your OWN coffee in it. You fill the little, permanently reusable filter and put it in the keurig and badaboom badabing, fresh, cheap coffee. The second cup will be thinner if you don't refill. Even if you put in new grounds each time, you'd still be using the same amount of grounds since you're doing it one cup at a time. And it'll only take about thirty seconds to dump the old grounds and put the new ones in... well worth the extra work to get a hot cup every time!

I'm totally asking Santa for one. We have a Tassimo, but I don't think it has the reusable filter... also, it sucks trying to find Tassimo pods! Keurig's selection is so much better!

  • Sometimes if my coffee gets cold in the morning before I get to drink it I use the microwave. I do not think heating it on the stove would change the taste at all though. In fact, I find reheating most things on the stove works better than a microwave anyway.
