Sitting

Hi mommies,

Hope everyone and their little ones are doing well. I admit I do a lot of reading and not a lot of posting on here but wanted to send out this note to see if anyone had any feedback. I learn a lot from what everyone posts!

My little guy just had his 6 month appointment and my doctor said he should be sitting much better. I have to do this exercise with him for 20 mins everyday. I was surprised by this only because I know babies progress at their own rate and wasn't to worried about it until now. He rolls over from both directions and even scoots all over the place. So now I am feeling badly that he isn't sitting yet.

Anyone else's 6 month old not sitting up all the way yet or is he just really behind? The doc said he may even need PT, so not what I wanted to hear!

I find that a little strange. One day DD could not sit then 3 days later she was sitting like a big girl. I think it will happen sooner than you think. Like you said all babies are different. I think you sould not be so worried

I think your doctor is being a little alarmist. My baby sits really well but isn't scooting much and only rolled over a few times before he decided that was silly and lost interest in practicing it. I wouldn't be too concerned for another month or two.

My Babies aren't Even Close To Sitting And Their pEdi Is Fine With it.

That sounds a little extreme to me. Like everyone has said, babies progress at their own rates. My son can roll and scoot but only sits on his own unassisted for maybe 10 seconds at a time, and can't pull himself into a sitting position quite yet. I'm not worried, I'm sure it'll happen soon!

That is totally alarmist of your pedi.

My little guy could only sit on his own for a few seconds on Weds -- and i went on vacation and came back to a fully sitting baby who can lean over and pick up toys and sit back up, it's nuts. I was "practicing" with him a lot, and I know my mom did too while I was gone, but it literally happened that quickly. Your little guy is fine, I'm sure... do the exercises and don't sweat it! He'll get there!

Not sitting up at 6 months is not unusual at all.

Wow that's crazy! I have worked in an infant room for 7 years and it is not uncommon for a 6 month old to not be able to sit up on their own. If it were your 9 month appt I could understand. Take it with a grain of salt I guess.

Physical therapy through Early Intervention requires a 25% delay by age, so by saying at 6 months your LO needs PT for not sitting, the pediatrician is saying that the normal age for sitting unassisted is 4.5 months, which we all know is not the case.

Definitely alarmist. No worries!!

Apparently your pediatrician only sees kids who start sitting by month 4 and walk and talk by 8 months.

I would not worry one bit.

LO was barely sitting independently at 6 months... he gained a lot of strength slowly but surely over the month. Now at 7.5 months he's really stable but does indeed tip over from time to time'

Strange. My LO was 6mos on Oct 8 and his pedi said it was completely normal that he's not sitting on his own yet. He has the strength but not the balance. He was a preemie but still I think 6-7 months is the norm. I would probably be looking for a more reassuring doctor if I were you!

This. I understood your op as saying that your doctor expected your baby to be sitting better than they were able to but not that the Dr expected that baby would be sitting unassisted and completely independent. Coming from the medical field I would hope that he made the statements and added the exercises as a way to acknowledge that he saw at 6 months something that you may want to take note and work on things so that down the road you won't have any issues. In my world that would be the equivalent of explaining diet changes to prevent diabetes if I saw a 300 pound patient come in. they may take it as being told they have or are going to get diabetes and dewel on those words or they may take it as the Dr is telling me I have these risk factors and need to make some changes so that I don't become a diabetic down the road. Some drs will say it nicely to protect your feelings and some will be more direct. I for one would want to just have it out on the line so that I can prevent rather than correct.

Don't be so hard on yourself. I'd do the exercises and go from there. Sitting up and rolling use different muscles and range of motion so it won't be long once lo gets the hang of their new muscles and catches up to whatever goals your Dr is suggesting.

Our doctor just told us that we needed to practice mor, but she didn't mention anything about delays, concern, PT, etc. And she only told us that because he was crying when she examined him and refused to even tripod, which he can definitely do under normal circumstances. Just do the exercises and don't stress about it !
